Use filters for specific Search Console error notifications

🐙 DYK that you can use filters to forward Search Console error notifications automatically - eg. to specific colleagues, or to your monitoring tools?

Here is how to set up your filter in Gmail - for and folks and anyone else who loves fiddling around:

🔱 STEP 1:

Find out what error codes are relevant for you. Search Console emails have dedicated IDs for each notification type, starting with WNC-

Screenshot of an email notification from Google Search Console: "New mobile usability issues found" - a code starting with WNC- is highlighted.

You can find them at the top right of each email from Search Console. The most interesting IDs for error monitoring might be:

- New issue detected: 10030322
- Large loss in impressions or clicks: 20101341
- Issue is being validated: 10030260
- Issue resolved: 10030335
- Issue fixing request failed: 10031170
- Notice of DMCA removal request: 594600
- Video issues: 20211735
- ~NEW~ Indexing issues: 20237597

🔱 STEP 2:

Type in a part of the error code using the search field in Gmail to bring up the filter dialogue, eg. WNC- and click "show search options"

🔱 STEP 3:

Populate the filter, adding all notification IDs and the domain in question - or simply copy the filter from here into the field "Includes the words":

from:(sc-noreply@google.com) (http://domain.com AND WNC-10030335 OR WNC-10030322 OR WNC-10030260)

🔱 STEP 4:

  1. Click "create filter" to bring up forwarding options.
  2. Click the checkmark for "Forward it to:" and add the email address of your colleague.

You can also apply a label at this stage, so all error notifications from Search Console are labelled "GSC ERRORS".

If you don't have set up anyone else's email address for forwarding in your Gmail account yet, you will have to do so now by clicking "Add forwarding address" - please read Google's description on how to do this for only one filter here: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/10957?hl=en-GB#zippy=%2Cyour-filters-are-forwarding-some-of-your-emails-notice%2Conly-forward-certain-kinds-of-messages

🔱CAVEAT:

Do not click "Forward incoming mail to" in your main Gmail settings, as this will forward ALL of your incoming emails to the new address, and not just your filtered ones!

Keep it set to "Disable forwarding". Only emails matching your filter will then be forwarded.

Et voilà: You just set up a shiny new filter for your error notifications, so the Search Console error notifications will never get lost in your full inbox again!
