Softwares - Through the Lens of Sustainability

One of the things that are growing faster than ever before are the number and size of softwares. Softwares have transformed phones to smart phones, homes to smart homes, cities to smart cities, etc. and trend is going to continue for the foreseeable future.

When a certain practice is likely to occur and/ or grow for many years to come, it needs to be looked from the lens of sustainability. That’s exactly going to happen with softwares in next few years.

Software vendors will be required to answer, where does their software stand in comparison with others in terms of sustainability? 

We all know, introducing a little change in a software can take months. So, why not ask yourself this question today? Before your competitor surprises you with some kind of “sustainable software logo” on their website.

A website is a face of any organisation and it’s a software itself. I will not be surprised if web browsers introduce a feature that will calculate sustainability rating of a website for the user. It can be based on page loading time, format and number of media files, caching headers, etc. There seems to be some web browser plugins out there already.

Green Software Foundation - A non-profit initiative seems to be doing some great work in defining the best practices to develop more sustainable softwares, metrics to calculate energy usage of a software, etc.
