Presenting the presenters: Ann Arbor, MI October 2-5 2023 #innovation #knowledge #exchange #lppde #lean #development Dantar Oosterwal, Argo-Efeso consulting group – Lean Product and Process Development basics This workshop introduces participants to the foundational principles of lean product and process development. It is targeted specifically for newcomers to the community to help get them up to speed on some of the basic concepts so they can get the most from the main conference. The workshop is based on Dantar´s model “The Lean Machine 7+1” In 2003 Harley-Davidson was awarded the Outstanding Corporate Innovator award by the Product Development Management Association (PDMA) yet a short time later the same organization was able to deliver over 4 times as much innovation. Through a significant investment in production capacity, the backlog of motorcycle demand Harley-Davidson had enjoyed in the 1990’s drastically reduced. In order to generate product demand, Harley-Davidson adopted lean product development methods to their product development system powering this dramatic improvement in innovation output and demand. Not many people recognized the business significance of the article in the November 2005 issue of Easy Rider Magazine. At a glance it was like every other article in every other bike magazine with a write-up on the latest products launches and the new model line-up for Harley-Davidson. After all, Easy Rider is not generally considered a scholarly journal. The headline of the article proclaimed in big bold print, “The Sleeping Giant Awakens”. The Sleeping Giant Awakens? Harley-Davidson had seen 24 quarters of record sales and record profits. But these were bike guys and they were blown away by the torrent of new products flowing from the motor company. The largest introduction of new products they had ever seen. Harley-Davidson’s lean product development efforts resulted in 50% reduction in time to market and a 4-fold increase in throughput while maintaining a quality level of 98% repurchase intent. Later as the Vice President of Innovation for Sara Lee, Dantar once again applied these principles in leading the creation and implementation of Sara Lee’s global Innovation process resulting in 35% improvement in R&D efficiency and 5-fold increase in revenue from new products. Great post by Asad Hamir! Crazily, global circularity is still in decline! The Circular economy Gap report 2024 states we are gaining traction but falling way short on action! "The share of secondary materials consumed by the global economy has decreased from 9.1% in 2018 to 7.2% in 2023—a 21% drop over the course of five years. In the same period, we have consumed over 500 gigatonnes. That's 28% of all the materials humanity has consumed since 1900." Asad mentions the fashion & textiles industry are implementing these models, but only just realistically. Look at the take back & recycling percentages companies that sell manufactured products actually have. Some are single figures. The furniture industry are adopting, look at Ikea's new model, the construction industry is increasing their circularity in the design, recycle & use of recycled materials in buildings, therefore we must all start to use equipment that has come from predominately recycled materials, this will have a huge impact on carbon. On this point, scarily, approximately 10% of UK businesses have a recycling policy for their technology. ♻ How are you expecting to report circularity for the future when you do not have a policy? Let's keep educating! Great work Asad. Tech, you need to accelerate fast. #circulareconomy

The car industry is a great model of the circular economy & sustainability 🤯 Yes, this highly-polluting industry did something right. And #BigTech needs to take a page out of its playbook. It wasn’t until around the 70s 🕺 that government passed legislation that required the car industry to develop a used car market and make repairs easier. Fast forward to today, and car manufacturers generate multi-pronged revenue selling new cars, selling used cars, providing repairs, and on recycling at the end of life. All the while, creativity and design in this space is flourishing. Rather than stifling circularity, Big Tech needs to embrace it to thrive.

Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement
The best way to mark #EarthDay today is to drive harder to implement our ambitions for tomorrow. I am acutely aware that Mercedes-Benz R&D is one of our strongest levers for delivering more sustainable mobility. That’s why we are so committed to our “Design for Environment” and “Design for Circularity” approaches. Not just today, but every single day, our experts are developing technologies and innovations aimed at decarbonising our value chain and moving towards circular economy. We are making strong progress in many areas – from steel and aluminium to recycled materials to drivetrain efficiency. But we know there is still much to do. That’s why my message on Earth Day is that we commit to keep on innovating and implementing. I am greatly encouraged by the success we are achieving. It gives me great hope to know we are on the right path on our journey into tomorrow. And because I can also see how much potential we have to go even further, I am determined to keep building momentum and push harder to reach our aims. Tomorrow drives Mercedes-Benz. #MercedesBenz #EarthDay #Innovation

UNLOCKING THE POWER OF SUSTAINABILITY: #Systems_Thinking is more than just #Lean_Thinking, it is also a way of being and set of personal characteristics. 💡 A comprehensive sustainability effort embraces #technology, shifting from #risk_reduction to #innovation_opportunity. 📌 How can technology be deployed to make businesses more sustainable❓🤔 📌 What role does the cloud have to play❓🤔 📌 How can firms continue on their path to digital transformation❓🤔 ▶ "The best laid sustainability plans embrace technology — and shift the focus of efforts from risk reduction to innovation opportunity." According to UN climate experts, 2023 was the warmest year on record. This puts the heat squarely on companies to accelerate their sustainability efforts. “It’s quite clear that the sense of urgency is increasing,” says Jonas Bohlin, chief product officer for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) platform provider Position Green. Sustainability can’t be siloed into one specific task, such as decarbonizing the data center. The only way to achieve sustainability is with a comprehensive, holistic approach (Systemic Investing for Sustainability).
As Toyota forecasts record profit driven by hybrid sales, Catherine Chabiron's recent article on applying sustainable development principles offers insights into Toyota's innovative approach to environmental challenges. "Toyota...is taking a set-based approach to the [sustainability] problem. Depending on the vehicle size and the driving distance, they believe the optimal solution will be different. Electric vehicles would be best for small urban commutes; hybrid powertrains would suit medium to large cars for those who commonly travel long distances; and long-distance haulers, such as buses and delivery trucks, would perform best with hydrogen. Consequently, Toyota is working on all three solutions." Click to read the full article: https://hubs.ly/Q02kqmRm0 And what do you think the future of mobility is?

Coaching the next generation of high-performing teams at Liberty Mutual | Team player & talent cultivator
The all new Fisker Inc Ocean is a game changer in the world of car making. Its minimalistic design doesn't sacrifice form, function or beauty. The level of innovation and attention to detail is impressive, this could very well be the new standard for car making. As a coach in Design Thinking, I'm always on the lookout for examples to share with my squad and the team at Fisker is certainly one to watch. My mantra is to be the model for change, not the target of it. When we’re building solutions for our customers, we’re focusing not just on delivering value, but also doing it in a way that is cost effective, accessible, and sustainable. The same holds true with the Fisker Ocean. It. Is. Gorgeous. It’s also affordable, with entry level models just north of $30k USD. With the average car price in the US over $40k, this is absolute crazy value for money. The build quality is impeccable - the Ocean is being built by the same folks turning out some of BMWs best vehicles. Henrik Fisker didn’t have to focus on sustainability - he could have taken his knack for design (Google it if you don’t know) and just churned out a beautiful EV. But HF is the model for change. He’s not waiting for the world to crumble or the laws to change, he set out from the beginning to do the right thing - to help save the environment. This car has recycled materials and better-for-the planet components throughout. Pair that with the longest range for any electric SUV, and you’ve got a car that’s going to go further for longer all while contributing less and less and less to climate change. Did I mention it has a solar roof? When we think about design and building the next thing, we need to think like Fisker and be the model for change. When we’re building the next thing, we’re not just building something that functions well and looks amazing, we’re building something that is accessible from the start, that is built in the most cost effective manner possible, and is sustainable by design. Hey team, let’s talk about Fisker - let’s see what we can learn. #fisker #designthinking #change #management

Innovation is often a long game. Truly breakthrough, culture shifting ideas require time, planning, and strategic foresight before they can properly come to fruition. The most strategic organizations know this. This is exactly what we did a few years ago when we were asked to develop an innovation strategy and product roadmap to help General Motors lead the connected car revolution. How do we deconstruct the driving experience and better understand the changing needs of drivers, passengers, and owners? What new concepts, products, and services will solve those needs? And how can we fully realize the promise of the connected car and design the future of car ownership? Each year, we see elements of this roadmap coming to life, including the evolution of OnStar and the development of other in-car experiences. Congrats to our partners John McFarland and Jeff Wilcoxon for leading the effort to transform GM’s approach to innovation from the inside and their team (Brent Pycz, Roman M., Aparna Raman, Patrick Nally, Bret Barhoover, and Francis Peng) for activating the insights and kickstarting the development of concepts that continue to pay dividends for GM and vehicle owners around the world.
