The shortage of skilled workers in Germany: the need for a new perspective The shortage of skilled workers  in Germany remains a significant challenge for the economy. Interestingly, recent findings show that only five percent 😱 of job advertisements in Germany are written in English. A quote from a career consultant illustrates the challenge: "There is still the idea that we are the hub of the world and everyone wants to come to us. That hasn't been the case for a long time." ⚡ Skilled workers no longer see Germany as the only option. They could just as easily go to the Netherlands, France or Singapore. In practice, this means that applicants are not prepared to learn German, Dutch and Chinese on a whim until they have signed an employment contract. The reality is that they only learn the regional language once the decision has been made. Yesterday I gave an interview about #Fachkräftemangel and #Willkommenskultur to German radio station #WDR5. The host, Elif Senel, asked me in the end: "Do you believe Germany can change?" My harsh answer: #Nein! Tonight I got another example, why: In spring I was invited to speak at Handelsblatt's "workinprogress" event. After my talk I got approached by a woman, who has an important position in a major German corporation. This long established company has business all over the world. For decades. But inside Germany they hired only in German language. The woman is tasked with reforming recruiting in this corporation. One of her goals: Convince her colleagues in HR to hire in English. She offered me a cooperation: I would recommended several English speaking professionals to her - and she would lobby for them to get interviews in her corporation. This way the recruiters could learn from real world experience, that hiring in English is an option. And she came through. I introduced five professionals to her. She found the right HR contact inside the corporation and lobbied for an interview. A few weeks later (this is Germany) she gave me two names. "You can tell them, they are invited to apply for the positions they suggested." I told my contacts the good news. They were happy and applied. One of them wrote me immediately: "I just sent them my application. Fingers crossed!" 48h later: He got an automated rejection. That's Germany. State Saxony-Anhalt starts soon a campaign to help attract more skilled workers across Germany, the EU and internationally - "Talents for Saxony-Anhalt". The state becomes more and more attractive as it offers many things that young talents look for (diverse opportunities in education / affordable childcare & housing / etc.). Aside to our plans for our fab, the existing companies and new companies joining us in State Saxony-Anhalt will for sure create a new growth atmosphere that talents will be attracted to. And I am convinced that the campaign will create a positive impact amongst talents who had to leave the area in the past to find a job elsewhere. To quote Michael Hüther - Director Institute of the German Economy. "Magdeburg will experience a structural change because it attracts people with highly attractive production and employment and income." .....I could not agree more. #moderndenken #iamintel. Beck While the mobility of people across borders has steadily increased in recent decades and borders seemed more and more open, a counter-development has taken place at the same time. In many places, a new fortification has taken root, evident from the construction of new walls and militarized border crossings. Borders have become increasingly selective and – enabled by digitization – upgraded to smart borders. Border control has expanded spatially and has become a global undertaking that is increasingly moving away from territories. Under the auspices of increasing globalization, borders appeared to many to be a relic of a declining age. Globalization, after all, was about networking across nation states and overcoming spatial separation. Not only the border closures in the wake of the corona pandemic have belied such an image. In the last decades, Mau shows, borders may have become more permeable for some people, especially in the "Global North," but they are not for many other people, especially those from poorer nations, thus creating what he calls a "global mobility elite." In many places, border systems equipped with security technology have been built, which intensify the monitoring and control of spatial mobility. According to Mau, borders therefore have a filtering or sorting function: they decide whose freedom of movement can be (legally) restricted. Borders are becoming increasingly important, particularly between areas with large disparities in wealth. This makes them an expression of global social inequality, to which they contribute through the unequal distribution of mobility opportunities. In his book "Sortiermaschinen," German sociologist Steffen Mau brilliantly analyzes how and by what means new ‘borders’ create mobility and immobility. For some, affiliation mechanisms such as passport, nationality, culture, skin color or language ensure open borders, for others these criteria close off certain regions and rigidly restrict their mobility. The borders of the 21st century, Mau argues, are the exemplification of the Janus-face of globalization. The book is highly read-worthy and and has fundamentally changed my perception of borders as separation and sorting mechanisms.
