🌊 Navigating Superyachts' Green Transition: Unveiling #SiemensEnergy's Innovations The superyacht industry faces a pivotal moment in its environmental journey. The European Parliament's call for drastic greenhouse gas reductions – 2% by 2025, 20% by 2035, and 80% by 2050 – adds urgency. The International Maritime Organization aims for full decarbonization by 2050, pressuring vessel operators to shift from conventional fuels. Siemens Energy and Advent Technologies join forces to revolutionize maritime decarbonization. Their methanol fuel cell systems, tested in commercial sectors since 2021, are now being integrated into superyachts for onboard power generation. A 50m pilot yacht project utilizes methanol-powered fuel cells, offering efficient and sustainable auxiliary power. These fuel cells, combined with internal combustion engines, could potentially drive superyachts entirely with green methanol, reducing carbon impact. A pivotal endeavor funded by the European Commission aims to power a superyacht exclusively with green methanol. Hybrid power solutions combining fuel cells and diesel engines offer cleaner electricity, addressing decarbonization goals. Liquid Wind, a Swedish startup, partners with Siemens Energy to produce e-methanol for global shipping decarbonization. Siemens Energy's green methanol-powered yacht system offers carbon-neutral propulsion. IETA is a non-profit organisation representing businesses that are committed to smart, well-designed and effective carbon markets to help achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and reach net-zero emissions by 2050. ⛴ 🔋 It‘s called Salicórnia, and it has autonomy for 26 trips a day and can carry more than 250 people and 19 cars on each trip. This pioneering project in Europe results from an overall investment of €7,326,490. It took two years to develop due to concerns about sustainability and innovation, from the design to the navigation features that allow it to be a boat with zero CO2 emissions. On Tuesday, the United Nations Global Compact held the first workshops for the Climate Ambition Accelerator (Nordics) programme with 97 companies from the Nordic region! The theme of this first workshop was greenhouse gas accounting. Supported by experts from WSP Nordics the participants discussed: ☝The critical principles that should be followed when undertaking GHG accounting using the GHG Protocol 🤔Common challenges that arise when doing GHG accounting 🌟Best practices for engaging value chains and dealing with Scope 3 emissions. 17 Norwegian companies are taking part in our third round of the Climate Ambition Accelerator. My electric racing team Rosberg X Racing is fighting for the Extreme E Championship this weekend! We’re currently second in the championship standings! Racing in the Atacama Desert, the driest nonpolar desert on Earth presents a stark reminder of our planet's diverse and extreme climates. This region, characterised by its hyperaridity, has remained arid for over 3 million years, making it a unique backdrop for our final race. Our journey this season has been about more than just competition. It's about innovation, sustainability, and scientific exploration. In line with this, I'm excited that Varun Shankar, a University of Oxford SDG Impact Lab Fellow we are funding through Rosberg Philanthropies, joined the team in Chile today to speak about our Rosberg Philanthropies project. With the St. Helena of the Extreme E series acting as a focal point, our partnership with Neste, Rosberg Philanthropies, and The Oxford SDG Impact Lab seeks to highlight the key role of renewable fuels and e-mobility in reducing emissions, particularly in the long-distance freight sector. Today, Varun participated in a circular economy panel, shedding light on practical solutions like renewable maritime fuels made from waste and residue. These fuels are crucial for powering heavy-duty and long-haul ships. He also discussed how Extreme E serves as a case study in integrating circular economy principles, applicable not only in maritime but also other transportation sectors.
