Make it a better place For you and for me and the entire human race These lines from Michael Jackson's song 'Heal the world' fits aptly to Wärtsilä's approach towards sustainability. #wartsila #sustainability #decarbonization #zerocarbonfuture Connect with Shrikanth Kotian for more on #energytransition #netzero #energymix #futurefuels #projectmanagement
In 2021, we announced our ambitious “Set for 30” decarbonisation targets: to become carbon neutral in our own operations and to provide a portfolio ready for zero-carbon fuels. We have made good progress in 2023 with both targets. We have reduced our CO2 emissions by 21,300 tCO2 e compared to the previous year. The main contributors to reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were purchasing green electricity and reducing emissions from R&D and factory engine testing. The development of concepts for pure hydrogen and ammonia continued throughout the year. One of these concepts was industrialised for the Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia marine engine, which was released for sale at the end of 2023. Moreover, Wärtsilä launched four additional methanol marine engines. Postdoctoral Researcher at ALBA Synchroton | Heterogeneous catalysis | Surface science | NAP-XPS | CO2 utilisation/conversion | In-situ studies
I am excited to share recent publication from my thesis work in #ChemicalEngineeringJournal. I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my research supervisor Dr. Chinnakonda Gopinath for immense support and guidance throughout this journey. Additionally, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all the co-authors Jyoti, Dr. Ruchi, Nitin B., and Dr. T. Raja Sir for their unwavering assistance and contributions. The study focuses on investigating the active state of Cobalt involved in CO2 reduction by using Near Ambient Pressure Photoelectron Spectroscopy (NAP-XPS and UPS) under operando conditions. Moreover, we successfully demonstrated the selective production of CO in a hydrogen-deprived environment at ambient pressure. The implications of this work are promising for sustainable and environment friendly CO2 utilization technology. These advancements have the potential to play a crucial role in realizing a carbon-neutral economy and facilitating carbon recycling efforts. Highly selective CO formation, With or without H2 could be utilized in the steel industry for steel making and to minimize emissions. By providing a deeper understanding of the active state and showcasing the selective production of CO, our research contributes to the development of more efficient and sustainable approaches to CO2 utilization. The findings offer practical solutions for industries seeking to minimize their environmental footprint and promote sustainable practices. 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗱𝗲: 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴'𝘀 𝘂𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼-𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀. The global #shipping industry is facing turbulent waters in its quest to achieve a 5% target of #zeroemission fuels in international shipping by 2030, as revealed by a recent analysis. This unsettling revelation, unveiled at the Global Maritime Forum ‘s annual summit in #Athens, sounds an alarm bell for the industry's larger goal of complete #decarbonization by 2050. The analysis underscores the stark reality that the current production of scalable zero-emission fuels (#SZEF) in the pipeline would cover a mere quarter of the necessary fuel demand by 2030. Notably, the delivery of zero-emission #vessels is also foundering, with only 24 such ships in operation by the end of 2022, primarily fueled by #methanol, and an additional 144 in the order pipeline. However, these numbers fall significantly short of what is required to meet mid-term #sustainabilitygoals, as highlighted in the report conducted by #UMAS, including experts from @University College London Energy Institute. Global shipping, responsible for approximately 3% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, faces the ambitious target set by the International Maritime Organization (#IMO) The revised strategy aspires to achieve 10% zero-emission #energy in international shipping fuels by the close of this decade, equivalent to a substantial demand for about 5.3 million metric tons of #hydrogen, 29.8 million metric tons of #ammonia, or 28.1 million metric tons of methanol. Notably, this transformation entails a considerable financial commitment, with the industry estimated to invest around $40 billion annually in SZEF #bunkering and production. The clock is ticking for the shipping sector to chart a new course towards sustainable and #environmentallyfriendly energy sources. #maritimeindustry #sustainableshipping #climatechange #sustainability Helmswoman

This green innovation is incredibly important. Fossil fuel-free steel. World's first. Green hydrogen is used instead of coal to make this steel by SSAB. This is huge. The steel industry is one of the top 3 producers of CO₂. It accounts for 8% of the global emissions. But don't forget: a) We have to focus on WHAT are we doing with this material, and b) HOW we bring it back without losing quality. Because: c) To be CO₂ neutral, we have to reduce the absolute demand for resources, and d) Replace as much of that demand with secondary and fossil-free sources. TLDR: Going fossil-free is key. But so must be using less, and using for longer. PS: What's more? Fossil-free or circular? 😁 #circulareconomy #sustainability #energy
