To all the British expats in my network (and beyond!): Changes to your UK voting rights just came into effect.
At some point in your time away from the UK, you like I will have realised that once you've been living outside the country for 15 years, you are no longer eligible to vote.
Well, effective as of today (16th Jan 2024) you can now re-register - or revalidate your existing registration.
The recently enacted Election Act of 2022 dismantles the longstanding 15-year time limit on voting rights for overseas residents, broadening their participation in nationwide polls…. It will also allow expats to contribute financially to UK political parties and campaigns.
Kudos by the way goes to one Harry Shindler: a British chap who had lived in Italy for many years, who took it upon himself to pursue this (in my view very welcome) expansion of British democracy. His persistent efforts spanned two decades, and are now finally coming into effect. The move, if you are wondering, brings the UK in line with many other major democracies (France, the US, Canada and Italy for example) that already ensure votes for life.
Having had a bit of a google, estimates for how many British expats there are range anywhere from three million to five and a half million (I know! I would never have thought it was that many). Obviously with the UK gearing up for a general election expected somewhere later this year, this change has the potential to add another dynamic for pollsters to reckon with.
For the rest of us, registration takes just a few minutes. Check here: https://lnkd.in/e5DNhZJB
You’ll need your last UK postcode, your passport and your NI number. Happy voting!
