Delighted to have participated in yesterday's panel discussion, jointly organised by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), the British High Commission in Malaysia and British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC). The session, titled "Unlocking New Horizons: CPTPP Benefits for British and Malaysian Businesses," featured key speakers Sumathi Balakrishnan, Malaysia's Chief CPTPP Chief Negotiator, Richard Colley, Director of Trade at the Department for Business and Trade, and Tan Sri Yong Poh Kon, Chairman of Royal Selangor who provided valuable insights into the advantages of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) for investors and exporters from both nations. It was illuminating to learn that the CPTPP stands as one of Malaysia's most substantial Free Trade Agreements, covering nearly 40% of the world's GDP and facilitating market access to a population of nearly 2.8 billion. The session also offered significant knowledge about the strategic outlook, market access, trade benefits for both goods and service suppliers, and the accession timeline for CPTPP, presenting opportunities for companies from Malaysia and the UK. While the topic is the same, the nuances and content change each year. A board that is future-focused will have the skillsets that are critical to overseeing material risks and strategic opportunities. The Chair will play an active role. Boards education will be a priority. Investor ideas will be valued and implemented as appropriate. There will be alignment with shareholders and stakeholders. Future-focused means planning ahead to meet targets. Future-focused means hiring today the skills needed for tomorrow. Future-focused means ensuring that your company invests time and resources in identifying the best directors for your board.
