Freelance Editor and Copywriter | Natural Sciences | Children's Literature | Garden Communication | Report Writing | Grant Writing
What are your options for becoming an editor in Canada? You can follow the route I took: complete an honours undergraduate degree, then a post-graduate publishing certificate program with an internship attached. My internship led to a job in house, and I stayed and gathered experience for eleven years before setting up a freelance business. But there are other paths. Some universities now offer editor-focused undergraduate courses or programs. For those with years of work experience instead of a degree, there are continuing education courses. And of course there are workshops and certification opportunities through Editors Canada. In addition to their own offerings, Editors Canada maintains a list of relevant post-secondary courses that are available across the country. Unfortunately, it's hard to know which ones are right for you without clicking through each one and hunting down the prerequisites. I know that because I went through each one while researching this post. I've arranged that information and more to help you trace your own potential path toward this career, starting from where you are now.

Social Media Manager | Content manager | Marketing coordinator | Content Marketing Manager | 8+ years experience in marketing & content creation for fashion & beauty brands | Work permit available
Creativity, flexibility and relevance have always been my keys to success. In 2015 I had zero experience in content but I was invited to join the company of my dreams — Condé Nast - as an intern. You ask me how? 🤓 I realized that I had to stand out. In one email I had to demonstrate that I am more talented than hundreds of other beginners looking for a job as an editor in a high class publishing house. So, I created personalized graphic cards with a list of my skills and my contact information. I relentlessly sent these cards to magazines' editors emails until one day the Editor-in-Chief of Glamour magazine Masha Fedorova had responded. A couple of interviews, a test task — and several weeks later I was in the office of my dreams doing a job that I'd always wanted to do. It took me less than a year to receive a full-time position as a Web-editor. Today I almost forgot how hard it was in the beginning to get the job of my dreams. Now, with all that experience behind me, I almost take it for granted. However, I've had my share of struggles and have pushed my way through multiple obstacles to reach the level I'm at now. Now that I start a new journey of finding a job in another country I feel as much a beginner as I was back in 2015. However, I remembered the drill, and I am ready to walk this path again to get The Job of my dreams. #mycareerpath #jobsearch

At uni, I studied French and Italian, And for the first two years I had no idea what I would do after. 😟 I considered law, interpretation, teaching, but none of them felt quite right. Until, I applied and was offered an internship at McCann Worldgroup Italy for my year abroad and my path started to become a little more clear. Before starting, I was expecting a dry corporate office life, bookended by a miserable commute… 🙄 But it turned out to be an environment where creativity was not only embraced but encouraged. That’s when I knew. Marketing is for me. I was part of a team that pushed me to share my big ideas and take risks in client briefing meetings. I started to understand how to build positioning strategies for big brands (plus my Italian got really good 💁🏻♀️). It was my first taste of a real job. And it was the experience I needed to push me in the right direction. When I got back to uni, I threw myself into volunteered marketing roles and freelance work to build my portfolio. Now, I’m a personal brand manager for 6 clients across the 5 different industries with 4 years of knowledge in the field. 🤯 But before all of that, I was clueless. Some people will know exactly what they want to do in primary school or during A-Levels… For some it all clicks at uni, and some still don’t know. The fact is, there is no perfect time. ❌ Everyone moves at their own pace. It took me a few tries to realise what was right for me. Take this as a sign to keep trying new options until you find yours. ✨ P.S. Here’s a lil throwback to my last day with the rest of the Strategic Planning team in December 2019 (and yes, we had an office swing!) 🤗
