Stadler’s FLIRT H2 Hydrogen Train Sets Guinness World Record for Longest Distance Travelled Without Refueling
In a landmark achievement for sustainable rail transport, Stadler's hydrogen-powered train, the FLIRT H2, has clinched a Guinness World Records title for the longest distance travelled by a hydrogen fuel cell electric multiple unit (EMU) passenger train without the need for refueling or recharging. The FLIRT H2 covered an impressive distance of 1,741.7 miles (2,803 kilometers), marking a significant milestone in the advancement of clean energy solutions in the rail industry.
The record-setting journey began on the evening of March 20, 2024, at the ENSECO Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado, concluding after more than 46 hours of continuous operation. This achievement underscores Stadler's commitment to innovation and its pioneering role in developing alternative propulsion systems for trains, aiming to reduce environmental impact and foster zero-emission travel.
First introduced to the public at InnoTrans 2022 in Berlin, the FLIRT H2 incorporates advanced solutions to seamlessly integrate hydrogen fuel cells and storage systems into Stadler's popular FLIRT commuter train line. Following rigorous testing in Switzerland and the United States, this world record attempt was meticulously planned and executed, demonstrating the FLIRT H2's exceptional performance and reliability.
Dr. Ansgar Brockmeyer EVP of Marketing and Sales at Stadler, and Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler US Inc., both expressed their pride in this achievement and emphasized the company's focus on future rail transportation technologies. They highlighted the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source, contributing to environmental protection and sustainable travel.
This record marks Stadler's second Guinness World Records title for trains with alternative propulsion, following the success of the battery-powered #FLIRT Akku in 2021. The FLIRT H2's success has garnered international interest, with further orders for hydrogen-powered FLIRT units in California and contracts for narrow-gauge hydrogen trains in Italy, confirming Stadler's leadership in sustainable public transportation solutions.

The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is underway and our four sponsored solar car teams are leading the pack! Amid challenging conditions including low light and heavy winds, our high-energy-density batteries are efficiently fueling the cars while they brave the tough Australian elements.
☀Australian science publication, Cosmos Magazine, says “The race is now led by four teams with new state-of-the-art batteries from American manufacturer Amprius. That power pack, which is expected to be the standard across all teams by the time the 2025 event rolls around, offers at least another kilowatt on previous power cells used in solar car competition. These four teams reported around 30% better capacity in the battery for roughly the same amount of weight of units used by other competitors.”
🔋We look forward to seeing the end results later this week and continue to cheer on teams Innoptus Solar Team, Brunel Solar Team, Solar Team Twente, and University of Michigan Solar Car Team!

In this week's Future Energy Talks podcast we speak with Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), about how we can develop the right frameworks to ensure a just energy transition, and help make a sustainable future a reality.
"A just transition is happening," says La Camera. "We will be able to reduce the inequalities in the world, having in the future both a new energy system and a world that is less unequal than today,"

Energy efficiency should be a major focus for any company looking to address their emissions. I would say heating is the most complicated aspect to reduce your emissions with the majority of boilers running on gas with no real alternative, without infrastructure change and investment. Boiler Optimisation is a great solution for business struggling to reduce their footprint from gas or companies who are in their transition phase looking to reduce their emissions quickly.
Are looking at optimising your site? Have you considered boiler optimisation? Do you know what Dry cycling is? Are you looking to save 10-25% on your gas?
