Why 1. FC Union Berlin are set for their most global Transfer Window ever. 🌍 From the German second division to the Champions League in four years, Union Berlin's international reputation has grown fast. 📈 But it can take a long time to build a big enough network to maximise opportunities for continued success in the global transfer market. Now that's all changed for FC Union. 🔴⚪ They have joined 700+ clubs on TransferRoom. It means they can open up transfer opportunities in North America, South America and other unfamiliar markets. And they get access to clubs' player availability and market needs, setting them up for targeted outplacement and smart recruitment. 📲 Technical Director Michael Parensen explains how TransferRoom will benefit the Bundesliga club. 🔗 Full story: https://lnkd.in/eKfuwWG9. #FCUnion #Bundesliga #SportsBiz #FootballBusiness

Today, I participated in the first-year anniversary event of ver*a, Vertrauensstelle gegen Machtmissbrauch, Belästigung und Gewalt in Sport, Kunst und Kultur. While I could share a LinkedIn-style post featuring a picture from the insightful panel discussions (which truly were informative), I've opted to highlight vera's impactful promotional video with a powerful message (#wehearyou): https://lnkd.in/d6NPsizf Many of us engage in sports within what we assume to be safe environments, often taking that safety for granted. Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone. There are numerous individuals participating in sports within unsafe environments, emphasizing the critical need for ver*a and its dedicated team (special shoutout to Claudia Koller and her team). Their work is far from complete, and they require extensive support—from sports federations and clubs to legislators. I hope their wishes expressed at the first anniversary will be acknowledged and fulfilled in their second year, leading to improved assistance for athletes facing harassment or violence. On a related note, the substantial issues ver*a addresses are also prevalent in the realm of esports, underscoring the urgent need for a similar organization in that sector.

It's a bit long, but stay with me, it's a fun story. Until a few years ago, I would not have thought that I'd ever feel anything like this, but these past few months, I'm getting more and more proud of being Austrian. Or in other words, I've learned to appreciate parts of my home that I had either never seen or didn't care about. One example is the story behind this song: https://lnkd.in/gqeYFnR4 As many of you are surely aware, EURO 2024 is going on right now, and Austria is doing quite well in the competition, but apart from that, this song is based on a very specific quote from Austria's football past. In a legendary game against Spain that Austria lost 0:9 (NINE!) - a guy from Austrian television actually had the nerves to do a half time interview with one of the players, at the score line of 0:5. The reporter asked: "What can we expect from you in the second half? It's 0:5 now, you have a lot of experience, what can you still get out of this match?" The obviously totally frustrated and beaten player Toni Pfeffer answered: "Na hoch werma's nimma gwinna" - meaning something like "Well, we won't win by a high margin, will we?" (much more funny and quippy in Austrian dialect) This is such a perfect example of Austrian humor. With one sentence, not only did he remind the reporter what a dumb question he had just asked and expressed his feelings towards it without being offensive (that is important), he also made the whole country laugh and turn an absolute debacle into a moment, that people still talk about and smile. So years after, Austrian pop artist AUT of ORDA made this football themed support song in light of EURO 2024, and they used that quote as the hook line. The song is literally called "Well, we won't win by a high margin" - but with a little word play of putting the (n) in "nimma" brackets - so you could also read it "always win by a high margin" instead of "not". The song lyrics also feature a number of countries we played against and lost horribly, while singing that "no matter if we lose or don't qualify, you'll still hear us singing" - again turning things positive. This kind of not taking ourselves too seriously, but actually still being kind of proud, while having a very honest relationship with the facts and accepting those, is what makes this so "Austrian" in my opinion. We were a huge glorious empire until a bit more than 100 years ago, now we're a tiny country that many people confuse with Australia, but still is one of the most visited destinations in the world and actually a really, really nice place to live. The song is a banger too, so even if you don't speak German, definitely check it out. ❤️🇦🇹

❓ Shareholder primacy: what is it? 👨🎓 The principle that shareholder interests are paramount in board decision making. Profit above all else. ❓ And why do we need to get rid of it, at least in football? 🧑🏼🎓 An example from Germany: Borussia Dortmund have signed a sponsorship deal with Europe’s largest weapons manufacturer, Rheinmetall. The name of a company that makes deadly weapons will now be plastered across the advertising boards at Dortmund’s iconic stadium. A club once known for its fan-first approach and legendary “yellow wall” will now be part of the PR machine of an weapons manufacturer. ❓How do we do it in the UK? 👨🎓There are two approaches. First, in general, we amend the Companies Act to put shareholder interests on a par with other interests, such as the community and the environment. My wonderful colleagues at Bates Wells have worked on the Better Business Act, which achieves exactly that aim: https://lnkd.in/gEe4SQG2 Second, in football, we incorporate good decision-making in the Football Governance Code, to be adopted by the incoming Independent Football Regulator. I will be working on this in the coming months. https://lnkd.in/gDR_Z3tJ
