My review of the current state of affairs for off grid working (Starlink + Apple Vision Pro + Battery + Solar Charger). My son's youth group decided to go to Fish Lake this week for a few days of fishing, swimming, shooting sling shots, playing around a camp fire and other things that 11-13 year old boys do. I have had a hefty travel schedule recently so I was worried about taking time off work to spend with him. Then I decided I'd try to combine a few technologies to see what I could make of my trip out in the middle of nowhere. Below is my report on how things went. My setup: 🛰 Starlink - this was a massive win. I had 150-200 mb/s internet that was 100% reliable. I powered it via a combination of a solar panel and genaverse battery system (see images). 🔋 Power (images included) - also a big win. I brought a couple of rechargeable batteries from Genaverse and Jackery. When combined with solar panels I had greater input than output and was able to run Starlink and power my necessary devices nonstop for 3 days. Indefinite is possible. 🖥 Office setup (images included) - I used a lightweight table and chair from Helinox and brought in my keyboard, Apple Vision Pro and charging stand. I brought an Apple Vision Pro in the hopes that I'd be able to have multiple screens to work off of and more of a normal office setup in terms of efficiency. The people I met with over Zoom referred to my "angelic" avatar almost immediately. When I described my conundrum and setup they all got a kick out of it and seemed to enjoy their first meeting with someone working off of an Apple Vision Pro. Results: 📈 I was able to get a full work day in, with mornings and evenings spent with my son while he was able to go spend most of the day with friends without Dad looking over his shoulder. My productivity was excellent compared to past attempts working off an iPad or with limited connectivity. 🛰 Starlink is simply incredible. 😕 Changing between apps on Apple Vision Pro - I had the new OS on it - is far less efficient than using my normal mac. I found myself using Siri heavily for the first time and it actually helped. I'd use it for things like "Hey Siri, open my calendar app," or "Hey Siri, add create an invite on my calendar for August 1st at 9 am MT." 🤕 The Apple Vision Pro is just too heavy. I found myself having to remove it every hour and a half or so due to physical pain. I'm hopeful Apple will solve this within a couple of iterations on the product. 🔋 Surprisingly, the battery connected to the Apple Vision Pro wasn't really an issue for me. A few years ago I would have said that working out of a tent for a few days could not possibly be effective. I'm now convinced that due to improvements in spacial computing, as well as improvements in terms of connectivity and battery power, within the next couple of years we will have environments where we can be just as effective as we would be from our offices or home working locations.
