Happy World Environment Day! 🌍 At Pérez y Cía. Group, we’re committed to protecting our planet. This year’s focus is on land restoration and drought resilience. Every action counts, and together, we can create a sustainable future. Among our initiatives, we're advancing our environmental commitments with an ambitious fleet renovation plan to eliminate sulfur emissions (SO2) and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 25%. Additionally, we support biodiversity and sustainability policies, including the installation of photovoltaic energy in some warehouses, ongoing upgrades of our truck fleet with electric and hybrid vehicles, and sponsorship of sustainable sports events. We calculate our carbon footprint across scopes 1, 2, and 3, implement energy-saving measures, collaborate with the United Nations Global Compact, and enhance facilities for employee well-being. Together with the principles of the "Responsible Care" initiative, we voluntarily commit to continually improving our environmental conduct. Meeting participants and speaking on a panel about circular economy on behalf of WRAP at Reset Connect as part of this year’s London Climate Action Week #LCAW2024, I am struck again by the extraordinary opportunities for innovation and reinventing businesses. Given the fact that most of the countries in the world have signed up through COP 28 to transition from a fossil fuel economy to a sustainable economy powered by renewable energy, the destination and direction of travel are clear. While timing is always a big factor in business success this is surely the decade of innovation opportunity. Whether an existing company planning to reinvent itself to be part of the future or a new one designed for the purpose, the possibilities for success are endless and the cost of not acting are certainly terminal. The companies embracing the practicalities of circular economy business models are designing the future economy, in step with what research shows the public want, but expect us in business to figure out how to deliver and make it easy. Take grocery refills, it will need the industry to really come together to reinvent supply chains, and drive to a scale profitable model that serves shoppers better than today’s solutions. But the prize is a big one, a lot less packaging than we use today. If every household in the UK refilled one product per week instead of buying another one, the team at WRAP calculate that’s 1.4 billion fewer pieces of packaging created, disposed and processed every year. Just for one. Thank goodness for the founders of Dizzie as well as others innovating and experimenting in this space such as the Refill Coalition with members like GoUnpackaged, Aldi UK, Ocado Retail, and CHEP. We need more retailers and brands to lean in to help solve the logistics and unit economics that could transform food and drink for the public, and help make the sector more sustainable. 🌱 It's June 6th so that means it's World Green Roof Day! 📅 World Green Roof Day has established itself as a key date globally in the green roof calendar, with the sector and champions of green infrastructure coming together to celebrate and raise awareness of green roofs and the crucial role they play in reducing the impact of climate change and biodiversity challenges facing the built environment. ☀️ The theme for this year is Energy on Roofs, and speaking in the Spring issue of sister title Greenscape Magazine, Co-founder of World Green Roof Day Chris Bridgman told us: “This year’s theme is Energy, from generating power in combination with green roofs, in the form of solar panels or wind turbines, to human energy, including running, cycling, yoga or even food growing and beekeeping. We encourage participants to share case studies, ideas, videos and photos on World Green Roof Day using #WGRD2024." He continued: “We’ve seen over 62 countries join the celebrations to date, showcasing projects, sharing green roof stories across social media, and hosting in-person events and rooftop tours.
