While the glitterati descends at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, spare a thought for those who haven't and will not make it there. No hobnobing with the who's who of the ad world! What a miss.Damn!! What should they feel about themselves and the ads they worked on. The tireless efforts they put into their work, which in fact made real impact for the brand, goes unrecognized. Does it amount to nothing. Certainly not. The human tendency is ' I'm not good enough, this ad is not good enough'. 'I'm not recognized among my peers. I'm a failure.' Hold on. You entered advertising not to win awards, you entered advertising to do some great work that made a 'difference' for the brands, customers and the world at large. You shaped narratives, you made the needle move. Not getting a Lion, Tiger or a Panther shouldn't stop you from doing what you love the most. * Advertising *. So, hop on that saddle and gallop to things that are more important.🐎🏇While they get their Lion, you get the Lion's share. Happy hunting🏹🦁 For that matter, we aren't sure if the memorable ad posted by us a day earlier made it to the Cannes. Who cares. It made it to our #hearts. I do not like American Football... sorry... no time to sit for 4 hours to see about 15 minutes of actual play... But the Super Bowl is another species in itself. For years, wherever I was in the world, I would try to be on time to watch the half time ads. Except for a few disappointing years, it never fails to showcase what truly creative minds can imagine. Every year, this event brings me to also remember to be on the lookout for the best ads in the world from the CLIO Awards. Have you heard of the CLIO Awards? A-level #humility does not need the note Bill Bernbach kept in his pocket that said, "Maybe he's right." I give myself a C on this one... I've long heard advertising creative legends such as Steve Harrison decrying the dominance of Purpose-Driven Advertising and... I thought - what are these eminent dinosaurs going on about? I'm in advertising... I'm seeing a lot of advertising.... I don't see it. But, yesterday, I spent an hour on The One Club for Creativity website and immersed myself in awards culture, something I've avoided for years as being disconnected from the core of advertising effectiveness. Now, I love the One Club, being a creative among creatives, and celebrating great work and great talent. But, here's what I saw there. The #1 agency and #1 individual ranked by number of awards won (thousands) have portfolios dominated by programs connecting brands to purposes. Many of these connections seemed forced, and tenuous from an objective advertising effectiveness standpoint. It is as if the judges, unable to access the true effect of the creativity, shifted from "Wow, that's brave," to awarding things about which they might have said, "Awww, that's nice." It's not that a beer extending accessibility in sports is a bad or wrongheaded thing - for example, in helping a blind man enjoy spectating basketball games. Quite the contrary, such programs are admirable and desirable and can be an important part of an integrated marketing strategy. But, for the most part, they are neither top-level strategies nor do they represent the peak of creativity. The formula is showing, and it's saying more about the culture of advertising awards shows and their judging panels than it does about what's building brands in the real world. Or, so it seemed to me. At least I could begin to appreciate a whole world of experience that may have led to those opinions. I could be wrong about any of this, of course. But...
