Conference realignment affects more than just football and basketball. University of Southern California is taking advantage of newfound revenue streams to boost its women’s sports brand. Let’s take a look:
USC’s women's soccer and lacrosse programs are set to receive a state-of-the-art $38 million stadium, Rawlinson Stadium, opening in 2025. Thanks to a generous $10 million donation from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation, this project will more than double the seating capacity for fans compared to the current field.
This investment highlights the growing focus and support for women's sports, particularly in college athletics. Joining the prestigious Big Ten Conference in 2024 will further elevate USC's athletic programs, as the media rights valuation is significantly higher compared to their former conference, the Pac-12 Conference. Rawlinson Stadium will boast impressive features, including 2,200 fixed seats, separate locker rooms for soccer and lacrosse, LED video board, field lights, and a natural grass playing surface, among others.
USC's women's soccer team has an impressive track record, with two NCAA national championships in 2007 and 2016. The women's lacrosse program, although yet to secure an NCAA championship, recently clinched the 2023 Pac-12 regular season title. This new stadium signifies a bright future for USC's women's soccer and lacrosse, providing them with enhanced facilities and further opportunities for success. The women’s sports boom is just beginning. (Front Office Sports)
