Road infrastructure isn't just about building, it's about understanding the unique challenges of every route. Recently, PTM partnered with AT and contractors for an in-depth site visit on Vaughans Road. Our findings? The road's narrow width, past pavement failures, and current inadequacies pose challenges for accommodating increased traffic, especially from the Long Bay development. Our solution? A proposal to sever vehicular connectivity between Vaughans Road and Te Oneroa Way. With a deadline set for Christmas 2023, our goal is to ensure a safer and more sustainable transportation flow. RailNews // Light Rail has been a hot topic last week, with much welcomed news that the second stage of Parramatta's multibillion dollar rail project given the green light. In contrast, in our nation's capital, claims are being made that the Light Rail Stage 2B Commonwealth Park to Woden (Stage 2B) is not cost-effective. These claims simply do not take into consideration the huge, long-term economic benefits light rail delivers well beyond providing an efficient public transport solution. Light rail projects in Australia and across the globe have consistently shown to dramatically transform communities, driving urban renewal and growth along its corridor, supporting better housing and job opportunities. Light rail delivers the kind of significant economic, social and environmental benefits that buses cannot, whose routes can easily be stopped or altered at any time. The revitalisation of Northbourne Ave and around Dickson interchange due to the first stage of the Canberra Light Rail were testament to the positive impact that permanent public transport infrastructure has on investment and urban development. #MajorProject // The first stage of Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) project is underway with boots on the ground across all six station sites. The project will deliver a 90km rail line that aims to relieve CBD congestion by linking every major train service from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line via Melbourne Airport. The ARA’s Value of Rail report highlights that rail contributes almost $30 billion to the Australian economy each year and supports 165,000 jobs - enabling the development of thriving and sustainable cities and towns. What's next for SRL? Works on the first tunnel access structure in Heatherton for the SRL project will begin this week. TUNNELS CONSIDERED IN SCOTTISH ISLANDS TRANSPORT PLAN Tunnels connecting Scotland’s Western Isles, Mull and the mainland are among proposals suggested in a Transport Scotland document published last week. The islands are currently served by ferries but in its Islands Connectivity Plan, Transport Scotland says a previous review identified fixed links could improve reliability, connectivity, capacity and travel times, and allow for the wider reconfiguration of ferry services. Transport Scotland acknowledges, however, that some island communities were concerned that fixed links would result in a loss of island identity, increased road traffic and subsequent environmental impact and a reduction in local services because of the connection being both on and off the island. “Due consideration will be given to bridges, tunnels and causeways before selecting the most suitable option for each of these routes. The focus will be on providing a resilient connection for our island communities who wish to be connected,” the organisation says in the document. 🚂🕰️ The 1847 Victorian constructed Plessy Railway Viaduct has partially collapsed, disrupting a section of the East Coast Main Line in the North. 🚧 It's a stark reminder of the challenges our aging infrastructure faces. We often discuss investment priorities, but as this viaduct crumbles, we witness the real-time consequences of underinvestment in our railways. The pioneers who built these marvels did so for future generations.
