🇦🇺 Almost a century ago, in 1929, the idea of building an underground railway under #Melbourne was born. After decades of debate, work began in 1971 on the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop, known today as the #CityLoop. A significant portion of the excavation of the tunnels and the lining of their walls and the setting of the tracks and reinforced concrete sleepers throughout were done by #Webuild predecessor. More kudos for the Fern Hollow Bridge, ranked #3 by Roads & Bridges in their top 10 bridges for 2023. Collaboration and determination were key to the successful design and construction of this structure in less than a year. The fast-tracked process began with an unexpected and high-profile collapse, and it took teamwork and design innovation to deliver it on such an aggressive schedule. https://lnkd.in/gXqC-843

So often, and particularly in urban environments, what you cannot see is what is really expensive. London is engaging in remedying years of mixing sewage and rainwater in a different way than most cities in the States are. While the engineering is fascinating (still not sure how to create the vortex), what most interests me is the architecture of the engineering; both the earliest sewers (a whole lot of bricks) and the elegance of today's concrete. Most of us do not give a 2nd thought to what happens when we flush the toilet. https://lnkd.in/eGjWdhm2

You get so much bang for your buck out of the repurposing of arches in this way. Their productive reuse can redefine the feel and function of a place, bring into use otherwise dead space and do so in a way which reveals and celebrates their unique architectural form. The absolute definition of a sustainable approach to city regeneration and place making.
Delighted to hear The Arch Company has been granted planning permission for the transformation of 10 derelict railway arches on Norton Street. Below is a sketch Arcadis drew back in 2017 as part of our planning application for Select Property's adjacent Affinity Living and CitySuites. It's actually HAPPENING!!!!!!! Fantastic news for #Greengate. CAN NOT WAIT. You can read more about The Arch Company's plans and see their image of the proposed Norton Street Arches here on Place North West. https://lnkd.in/g2AWEnNw

HB&P has raised significant concerns with Network Rail’s plans to smash a pedestrian footbridge through the barrel vaulted trainshed roof of the Grade II* listed Darlington (Bank Top) Station (b. 1887). The proposal is part of a wider scheme to improve access and efficiency of the local railway network and includes creation of a new station entry building and bus interchange to the east side of the station, and new platforms outside the trainshed so that local trains from Middlesbrough and Saltburn do not have to cross the mainline. There is an existing subway from the platforms to the western exit, but extending this to the new eastern platforms has been dismissed due to the perceived ‘passenger experience’ of a subway, instead favouring a footbridge and stair and lift arrangement that breaks through and cuts across two of the three original vaulted roofs, greatly altering the sense of space and the unimpeded curve of the roof structure. Darlington is the most complete and unaltered example of the main stations designed or extended by the North Eastern Railway’s architect William Bell, who also designed York Station (b.1872) and the trainshed extension to Newcastle in 1890. We have called for a more balanced approach in managing passenger movements within this listed station, and requested further consideration be given to the subway option, which would also provide a direct link between the western and eastern entries. Darlington Council have since approved the application. 📷: External view of the proposed footbridge. Green light for final key structures to bring HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd into Birmingham 🚅🟢 The construction of two new viaducts to bring HS2 into Birmingham has been approved by local councils, marking a significant milestone for the project. These represent two of the eight ‘key design elements’ (KDEs) on the West Midlands leg of HS2. All eight KDEs are structures which are identified as being significant because of their size, proximity to communities, or location within sensitive areas. The first is the River Blythe Viaduct, which has received planning approval from Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. A 475-metre low-lying structure just south of the new HS2 Interchange Station in Solihull, it’s designed to skim the flat, agricultural landscape as it crosses the River Blythe, the floodplain and Meriden Road near Hampton in Arden. Awaiting planning decision for the proposed redevelopment of a 2ha brownfield site with 217 new homes in Basildon, Essex. The site is designated for employment use but has laid empty for over two decades. Bordered by an elevated dual carriageway on the north and a waste handling facility on the south, the environmental impacts and creating a high-quality residential neighbourhood in the midst of these adjacent land uses presented the biggest challenges. Good site access and the mainline train station close by enabled us to consider higher densities. The overall masterplan has been developed with a road and parking buffer zone along the northern boundary, a green buffer zone along the south boundary and ample green space between the residential blocks. Each block is arranged to face east and west with minimal outlook towards the north and south. A truly sustainable approach to both the site layout and the design of the buildings has been applied in order to create an outstanding re-generation proposal. Total GIA: 155,000sqft #residentialdesign #regeneration #brownfield #Basildon#Essex #contemporaryhome #contemporaryarchitecture #rohacsarchitects #rohacs

Are you familiar with these fascinating facts about the Interstate Bridge? ✅ The Interstate Bridge spans the majestic Columbia River, connecting the cities of Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington. ✅ Originally built in 1917 as a single bridge carrying two-way traffic. ✅ A second twin bridge opened in 1958, with each bridge moving one-way traffic. The 1917 structure is northbound, and the 1958 structure is southbound. ✅ Designed by renowned architects and engineers, the Interstate Bridge features a distinctive steel truss design, contributing to its iconic appearance on the Columbia River skyline. ✅ It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as the "Portland–Vancouver Highway Bridge." ✅ Serving as a vital transportation link, the bridge is a crucial lifeline for communities on both sides of the river, fostering economic connections and regional cohesion. ✅ The Interstate Bridge has pedestrian walkways, providing stunning views of the river and the surrounding landscape. ✅ The Interstate Bridge Replacement Program was recently awarded $600 million in USDOT grant funding. The Interstate Bridge is more than just a physical connection; it's a testament to the enduring relationship between Oregon and Washington. From its historical inception to its ongoing role in shaping the economic landscape, the bridge stands tall as a symbol of progress, unity, and shared prosperity.🛥⛵️🚤🚣♀️ #pdx #pdxrealestate #pdxrealtor #portlandoregon #portlandrealestate #portlandrealtor #clackamasrealestate #clackamasrealtor #greshamrealestate #greshamrealtor #lakeoswegorealestate #lakeoswegorealtor #fidelitypdx #pdxbridges #bridgesofportland #sandywilliamsrealtor #remaxequitygroup
