Lead, follow, or get out of the way: Lessons from Lee Iacocca and Kathleen Hanna
“Over, Under, Around, and Through” is not just an extremely dated paean to free range parenting, but a core part of my leadership philosophy. I’d like to say someone taught me this at some point in my early years, and having parents who grew up working class and hustled into the middle class is certainly part of it, but the truth is, it was always part of my DNA.
When I got really into indie rock at 14, I knew I wanted to hang out with artists, see live music, and be part of the scene. But a few disastrous guitar lessons later, I realized that playing music wasn’t the path forward – so what was? Well, I cared about social causes and no one was going to turn down a bright eyed and idealistic kid who just wanted everyone to register to vote, so I made a few calls and started putting on benefit shows and hosting tables at my local all ages club. I wanted to write for a publication bigger than my high school paper, so I marched down to the local alt-weekly (RIP The Rocket) and convinced them to let me review CDs.
It’s been years since I applied for a job – I just create them for myself and either run my own shop or convince a company to fund my work. I run ultra-marathons because I can. I was the state champion impromptu speaker twice in high school and made it to the top 50 at nationals, and boy, does it still show.
True leaders, like Lee Iacocca, know that people should either lead, follow, or get out of the way, and that you have to be able to distinguish between those groups of people in the blink of an eye. If someone is a leader, work with them. If someone is a follower, get them behind you. If someone wants to be in the way, step over, crawl under, or go around them (going through them is a bit violent). Don’t waste your time trying to convince people who just say no – find better people.
In my punk days in high school I loved the band Bikini Kill and their lead singer, Kathleen Hanna, because she embodied the DIY (Do It Yourself) ethic. If no one will write about your band, start a zine. If no one will book you, put on your own show. True leaders know that you make your own magic. I could have sat around for years waiting for someone to give me a job in VR, but I went out and started my own company and made it happen.
This type of seat of the pants, spit and duct tape leadership certainly isn’t for everyone, but it keeps things moving forward. Start a thing, do a thing, and leave everyone else behind.
