Elevating Rail in Europe - A long term vision for the development of long haul rail!   #rail is considered the silver bullet to achieve the goals of the #europeangreendeal. Remember: -70% CO2 emissions in Transportation by 2050. 👉🏻 But reality is that rail is far away from being the silver bullet. For a simple reason: there is not and will not be enough capacity in the European rail system to fit the additional volumes despite the modernisation and digitalisation measures. Building new lines or completely new systems will take ages considering the cumbersome planning approval processes in most countries. And there should be better use for the limited land reserves in Europe.   ➡ Faster acceleration, much higher, harmonised average train speeds on existing #railinfrastructure are the key to enhance substantially capacity. But therefore, rail needs to reinvent itself migrating from a 100+ years old technology to modern and efficient #levitation technology.   ➡ Nevomo and other companies are exploring ways on how to literally elevate existing rail infrastructure to new performance levels with #maglev technology. A stepwise deployment, e.g., starting with linear motor propulsion will secure medium term effects and cost control. Current infrastructure will not be substituted, and the asset value built with taxpayers’ money will be leveraged for the future. Still many open questions, but I think it is worth for the #railwayindustry and #infrastructure operators as well as institutions to investigate this! Electric and high-speed trains, powered by renewable energy sources, are becoming the norm, reducing carbon footprints and reliance on fossil fuels. Embracing automation and artificial intelligence optimizes scheduling, ensuring efficient use of resources and minimizing delays. However, overcoming these hurdles requires substantial investment and collaborative efforts. WHY RAIL IS OUR SOLUTION AND COLLABORATING IS THE BEST WAY TO DO IT? Despite our familiarity with EVs, future electric transportation isn't just cars and buses. The rail industry is transforming railways into a high-tech, first-choice option, set to replace aviation on middle and short routes. The 19th-century invention of rail remains durable and is now crucial for electric mobility in the energy transition. Today, electric trains make up three-quarters of global passenger rail transport, up from 60 percent in 2000, making rail the most widely electrified transport mode. Rail transport's enduring success is due to its energy efficiency. Handling 8 percent of global passengers and 7 percent of freight, it consumes only 2 percent of total transport energy. Rail is the most energy-efficient and safest transport mode. As a result, new railways are being built and existing ones upgraded worldwide. Many EU states are becoming technological hubs for infrastructure and digital advancements, further enhancing railway safety and efficiency. Modern high-speed railways use advanced technologies like ballastless tracks and advanced signaling systems to reduce maintenance downtime, lower reinvestment costs, and ensure efficient passenger and cargo flow. Early involvement and close collaboration are crucial for the success of high-speed rail (HSR) development in the EU. These practices enhance project planning, improve risk management, and incorporate innovative solutions from the very early stages. Collaborations ensures various stakeholders such as investors, planners, designers, infrastructure, rolling stock, operations, maintenance and customer services to work together for comprehensive and sustainable outcomes.
