So Fujifilm is now into healthcare, cosmetics and semiconductor business?
This was a question posed to me in many of my social engagements. I had to explain the journey of Fujifilm and the wisdom of the visionary former Chairman andd CEO, Mr. Komori-san, to my listeners and friends.
We were once the photofilm manufacturers which most people knew and lived with in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s etc.
But we had to evolve. As a business and with the disruption of digital technology in the last 2 decades, Fujifilm had to innovate, change and grow.
To be and remain who we are today and where we will be heading tomorrow.
1. Change is here and constant - With an evolving world, change is inevitable for everyone. Whether you are in the business or a consumer. A company has to position itself strategically and at the same time focus on what has been successful for you, leverage it as your strengths and grow from there. It applies to us too. What we have learnt academically is most likely not going to be relevant in a couple of years' time. What are our strengths after we graduated? What have we learnt? What is this experience that is leading us to and helping us as a person?
2. Mindset - This video clip is at least 7 years old, 48 minutes long (please be patient to watch the entire clip) but it is still relevant today. Yes. It talked about the Fujifilm journey. But it also showed how people can change if they allow themselves to. Therein lies the key of this change is our mindset. Are we in a growth mindset? Are we willing to listen? Are we willing to learn new concepts, ideas, thinkings, etc.? Are we learning enough to keep ourselves abreast of what is happening around us? Can organizations play a part in shaping the future of society? I opine that we can if we remain humble, be at all ears, start to grow and contribute through the organizations we work in!
3. Looking Ahead - When I joined Fujifilm Asia Pacific, we were in Instax, Astalift, X-ray, Endoscopy business, etc. Then came the full suite of medical imaging devices business and I had to prepare for that. I had to grapple with new products, examine new risks, understand the mindsets of the medical imaging world and close the gaps of both the existing and new stakeholders. Not long after, Fujifilm acquired new competencies in the semiconductor business. To clarify, Fujifilm started its electronic materials many years ago. But its latest global acquisition of CMC Materials evidences its desire to expand and develop capabilities and competencies in the electronic materials business now and for the future. Hence, it cannot be further emphasised that as stakeholders, we too, have to gain new experience, increase our knowledge and more importantly, position ourselves to add more value to the organization to create positive impact and contributions to the society.
This year Fujifilm celebrates its 90th anniversary! What a journey!
