I know cookies 🍪 taste yummy, but sad to say, we are not talking about the ones you bake at home, but rather those small files that are placed on your computer by those websites that you visit whenever you are on the internet. What happened? In January 2020, Google announced its commitment to user privacy and data protection by setting a plan in motion to phase out support for third-party cookies in its Chrome browser, and on January 4, 2024, Google restricted third-party cookies for 1% of users and also plans to tighten up third-party cookie restrictions to 100% of users from Q3 2024. Genuine User Privacy is very much at risk The Privacy Sandbox could be a smokescreen for Google Ads Data Manager (GADM) building up the importance and impact of publisher data features like Customer Match and Enhanced Conversions. This suggests the move to leverage Google’s massive logged-in user base as a replacement for third-party cookies. “This consent process provides less transparency and control to the user than the consent process used by open web vendors. The privacy harm is even greater when one considers that even more of this advertiser data will be shared with companies that already know a lot about its consumers (including highly sensitive information). If a reduction in the number of data controllers can be seen as net privacy positive, the further concentration of personal data in the hands of a few mega-corporates is likely to ring all privacy alarm bells. “ #firstpartydata #GAM #adtech #cookies #google

Are you ready for a post-cookie world? A significant step has been taken in the effort to phase out third-party cookies by the end of 2024, marked by Google's recent introduction of a feature designed to automatically restrict cross-site tracking. Known as Tracking Protection, this new addition is part of Google's wider Privacy Sandbox Initiative, and is anticipated to impact approximately 1% of Chrome users worldwide, translating to around 30 million individuals. As a result, this development is prompting organisations to look for alternative privacy-centric tracking and measurement techniques, such as attribution modelling, customer data platforms and first-party data collection, to bridge the insights gap in a post-cookie world.
