Did you know it’s International Women’s Day this Friday? That is why, this week, we decided to introduce one inspiring woman at Climeworks every day.   Up next is Nina-Luisa Michels, Manager Chemical Sustainability & Quality. For her, pursuing a career in chemical engineering was an easy choice. And she framed it beautifully: “The invisible dance of atoms and molecules, which are the fundamental building blocks of our nature, fascinated me. I was drawn to unravel their secrets and contribute to scientific advancements.”   During her studies, she then became increasingly aware of pressing global challenges, especially climate change, and she recognized the pivotal role of scientific innovation in addressing these issues. So, for her, joining Climeworks felt like a natural progression.   “Climeworks’ groundbreaking work in direct air capture technology resonated with my wish to find practical solutions for combating climate change. Collaborating with like-minded individuals to develop and implement solutions for the permanent removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere is more than a job, it is a commitment.”   What challenges she faced as a woman in a leadership position and mother of two young children?   “Definitely balancing demands of work with the responsibilities of being a mother. Juggling deadlines and meetings while ensuring my family's needs were met, required careful time management and effective communication and having a reliable partner at my side.”   Thankfully, she was able to excel at both – work and family. And even though women are often underrepresented in such roles, she felt it also presents an opportunity to drive positive change.   “I believe that fostering diversity and inclusion is not just a goal but a key driver of innovation and success in today's competitive business landscape.”   Her advice to other women?   "Embrace who you are, stay curious, and above all, have confidence. I understand it's not always easy; personally, I'm still working on building that confidence day by day. My 3 overall messages at Folkemødet: 🤝 Patient safety and sustainability must go hand in hand, and with our equipment we ensure both. ✅Sustainability is about climate (CO2), but also about the environment (water, chemicals, etc.), as well as patient safety. ♻️We should change the legislation so that it is possible to a greater extent to recycle materials from medical equipment to other medical equipment, so that we "close the loop" and increase circularity. #ambu #folkemøde #sustainability #patientsafety

What is important to you in your working life?    Today, it is exactly one year since I joined the DLG Group, attended my first Annual Report Meeting, and shook hands with 200 members of the Board of Representatives and new colleagues.    And today, I was once again reminded why I chose to become part of DLG Group.   Our annual report and results have just been published – solid results 😊. The report describes how we work to take responsibility and move the world and people, where we can.    We are playing offence. We have e.g., invested in an insect protein factory, we are developing feed additives that reduce methane emissions from cows, we have become co-owners of a company that wants to develop circular energy clusters on land, and we have negotiated a sustainability-linked financing agreement.    In the area where I work the most, we have strengthened our work on safety and reduced the number of accidents by 12% compared to 2022 - of course, aiming to avoid accidents altogether. We've worked on our inclusion and diversity as well as our pipeline of female leaders, and we see continuing progress. Furthermore, we've rolled out our updated core values and emphasised the value of being connected. To each other, to partners and customers, and in society.   We don't talk that much about what we do and how much it matters. Yesterday evening, we hosted our first #SustainableWomen networking event at The Conduit. It was fantastic to come together with a group of extraordinary female leaders from across the #sustainability space and share ideas and strategies for how we can deliver greater impact and continue to drive forward environmental and social change in all industries. Thank you to all those who joined us for a memorable evening. Despite the negative headlines around #climateaction we’ve seen this year, the atmosphere in the room was optimistic, and the conversation focused on the opportunities ahead. Some of our key takeaways from the event were: 🟢Events like this are sorely needed - many attendees told us how refreshing it was to have a dedicated space for women to share their experiences and support each other. 🟢Compliance is high on the agenda, with a raft of new regulations and reporting requirements incoming. Four letters in particular resounded throughout the evening: #CSRD. Many conversations centred on managing these competing pressures and how a renewed focus on materiality will be key to keeping pace with this new regulatory demand. 🟢The growing importance of #nature - taking action on nature, alongside climate, is on the horizon for many attendees, and their eagerness to do so was evident. However, there is a shared recognition of the need for more clarity on how to proceed. The response was overwhelming, and we hope to make our Sustainable Women event a regular event that will help bring together women leaders in sustainability and sustainable industries, foster community, support networking, and, perhaps most importantly, share knowledge.

As the chemical industry continues to evolve, it is essential to invest in the development and diversification of the future workforce. How are companies and organizations contributing to building a sustainable and inclusive workforce for the chemical industry?
