Fracking preparation and completion can take months. When formulated into a fracking fluid, biocides need to be effective against a range of microbes and for an extended period. This reduces the need for costly re-applications and further interventions, which generally occur with misapplied biocides. Isopropanol and Ammonia A composition that includes ammonia and a low molecular weight alcohol, e.g., isopropanol, in an aqueous carrier solution has been proposed to be cost-effective for EOR (Cobb, 2010). The composition can be recovered and recycled to further decrease costs. Sulfur-containing compounds are widely known as odorants used for fuel gases, but they usually generate sulfur dioxide when the fuel gases are burned. Also, if the fuel gases are used in fuel cells, a desulfurizer must be installed to remove odorant components that would cause catalyst poisoning (Kato, 2007). Attempts have been undertaken to provide sulfur-free gas odorizing compositions, including the use of alkyl acrylates, vinyl or alkyl ethers, n-valeric acid, ethyl acrylate, cyclohexene, and norbornene derivatives (Mansfeld et al., 2006). These odorants have certain disadvantages, however. For example, acrylic ester odorants are chemically unstable. The content of cyclohexene or ethylidene norbornene must be larger than those of mercaptans (Kato, 2007). On the other hand, nitrogen-containing odorants may cause the enhanced formation of nitrogen oxides, which are toxic and react with sunlight to form ozone. Among the alcohols that are suitable as odorants, geosmin is a preferred compound. Geosmin actually means earth smell. It is a naturally occuring organic compound produced by microorganisms. Sulfur-free odorants can be smelled readily, but the odor rather resembles garlic. Human common sense does not associate this type of smell with combustible gas, because people are accustomed to the mercaptan smell. Some cities have changed their odorant in the natural gas pipelines to sulfur-free odorants, with reports of success (Wagner, 2005), but others have returned to the conventional sulfur-based odorants. The behavior of Gasodor S Free™during reforming of methane that has been odorized with just this odorant has been tested with respect to the application of methane in fuel gas systems. Read for free here: https://lnkd.in/enKSvHn7 CF Fertilisers UK today confirmed it is proposing to permanently close the ammonia plant at its Billingham complex, located on the east coast of England. The company said the closure is aimed at securing the long-term sustainability of its business in the UK, and to help serve its customers in the country more efficiently. CF intends to continue ammonium nitrate (AN) and nitric acid production at the Billingham site, by using imported ammonia. The company has been relying on imported ammonia at the facility for the past 10 months following its decision to temporarily idle the plant in August 2022. The plant consumed an average of 1.13mn m³/d of gas in the first eight months of last year, but consumption has been minimal since then. CF said it does not expect ammonia production at Billingham to be cost-competitive in the long-term compared with imported ammonia, primarily because natural gas prices are projected to remain high in the UK, relative to other regions, and also because of the impact of carbon costs. Additionally, the company said the closure in recent years of industrial customers' UK operations that had consumed significant ammonia volumes for their businesses, has created a supply-demand imbalance for ammonia production at Billingham. The company believes that ample global availability of ammonia for import, including from CF Industries' North American production network, will enable more cost-competitive and efficient production and sales of ammonium nitrate fertiliser and nitric acid for its UK agriculture and chemicals customers moving forward. Its next ammonia import cargo of 9,000t is scheduled to arrive at Tees port around 7-8 August on Trafigura's Oceanic Breeze ex-CF Donaldsonville, and the producer has been importing similar-sized cargoes from its Americas plants for much of this year. CF will be entering into the required collective redundancy consultation process with its recognised union, Unite, and elected employee representatives. Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation (Anammox) Process. Anammox is a biological process of removing ammonical Nitrogen from wastewater. This is especially applied in case of ammonia rich wastewater such as digester supernatant. Anammox process requires no external carbon source. This process uses nitrite nitrogen as electronic acceptor in the Oxidation of ammonical nitrogen. Nitrogen gas is produced as product of this biological reaction. The hydrate formation temperature can be reduced by the addition of antifreeze agents such as methanol, glycols (Petersen et al., 1991). Brines have inherently corrosive properties and therefore are not suitable for use. Ethylene glycol is preferred because of its low cost and low solubility in hydrocarbons.
