As a parent, I appreciate the UK's educational system for its well-rounded approach to personality development. However, I was frustrated with the lack of focus on tech education, which leaves students ill-equipped for today's world. This frustration drove me to establish FIRST Tech Challenge UK, an organization that uses robotics to make #STEM more accessible and less intimidating for young minds. In a FIRST team, participants fulfill a variety of roles that develop both technical and soft skills, similar to those found in the corporate world. Unlike other STEM programs that tend to be unidimensional, FIRST teams include students who may have no hardware or software roles but who spend over 12 weeks in close proximity to tech, engaging in communication, fundraising, planning, presentations, and more. At the recently held Championship event at Cambridge, I was pleasantly surprised to see that almost half of the participants were female. I spoke with many teams and found that several of the young men and women had no prior tech experience but joined because their friends had an excellent time in previous years! It was exciting to see other students and some parents cheering on these robotics stars. A BBC team led by Spencer Kelly followed the journey of our Trustee and ambassador Toby Osborne 's team, BSG Robotics, through the UK’s most impactful robotics tournament. This was featured on BBC yesterday. I am delighted that this program, which kicked off in 2019, is getting the coverage it deserves. Join us in our mission to prepare the next generation for a technology-rich future. Thank you Ed Cervantes-Watson, Patrice John-Baptiste, Toby Osborne, FIRST team, teachers, students, volunteers and all our supporters! #STEMEducation #Innovation #FutureLeaders #FIRSTUK #TechEducation Watch the BBC piece here : https://lnkd.in/e-CFPnS5
