Heading to the Centre for Alternative Technology to be part of a panel on starting a business. 👨🎓 I'm very excited to be heading back. I started a part time MSc here nearly ten years ago and it was a relief and a joy. I had been feeling helpless and disconnected from the climate crises, but more visceral for me was species extinction. I expected to learn about this, and definitely did. 🌱 But what was transformative for me was the site. Reclaimed from a disused slate mine, what was a cut up landscape had been transformed back into a lush ecosystem. 🌳 It felt like an oasis. Every couple of months I would leave London behind and travel to Wales for a week's learning. The walk from the station up to the site felt like I was shedding a concrete skin. On my first walk up I saw a kingfisher on the river. 📖 If you're looking to learn about sustainability, add CAT to your shortlist. It's a transformative learning experience, community and place: https://cat.org.uk/ 💡 If you're not looking for a course but interested in practical ways to decarbonise and increase biodiversity using existing technology have a look at their zero carbon britain work: https://lnkd.in/ebGtF76b It's a week of big returns for me, this one feels very different than the last one! https://lnkd.in/eAw792JQ #rewilding #sustainability

I am happy to share our recently published article, "Defining green innovation, its impact, and cycle – A literature analysis". This article is a mere literature review aiming to summarize a topic of a great magnitude such as green innovations and to show what they are, what moves organizations towards them, how can they be achieved, what is being done both in the EU and Finland in that regard, and to and propose a framework to better understand green innovations. https://lnkd.in/dnKXVuRK

Last week I was participating the 2024 Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress by Future Earth, held in Helsinki and Espoo, Finland from 10-14 June in collaboration with Finland’s Sustainability Science Days organised together by University of Helsinki and Aalto University. First thing to be mentioned - interactive roundtable discussion I organized from Estonian Business School side, where together with colleagues Renee P., Marge Täks, and an invited speaker from Finland, Zahra Safaei, Ph.D. we discussed "Green Transition in Estonia: Entrepreneurial Perspectives and Policy Recommendations". It was a fruitful discussion with the audience and colleagues. Another highlight is that I attended “The Avenues to Sustainability – Key Lessons from Sustainability Science” book presentation edited by Dr. Janna Pietikäinen and Dr. Kaisa Korhonen-Kurki from the University of Helsinki and Finnish Environment Institute and former Finland President Tarja Halonen. It's really inspiring reading, and I definitely plan to use some chapters as reading for my students next semester. I really enjoyed Alternet Day sessions focused on the theme of nature restoration. Thete were three major topics covered: ecosystem restoration for increased biodiversity and multiple ecosystem benefits, the science-policy interface in nature restoration, and the governance of nature restoration. It was great to learn about multiple projects and initiatives going on. A lot of inspiration to upgrade courses and research ideas. And of course all plenary sessions were treasures content wise and a lot of new ideas came in for me personally. My word cloud with key topics and highlights from the conference: #sustainablemanagementpractices, #socialsustainability, #justtransition (in broader meaning that just EU regulations focus), #biodiversity, #impact, #ecosystemservices, #transdisciplinarity, #equity and #equality, #multicrisis, #mindsetchange, #decolonizingscience.

"The Sustainability Compass is an incredibly valuable, and important resource in educating the youth on sustainability and the promotion of sustainability practices. The collaborative and interactive nature of this tool invites discussion in a way that may not be feasible through other tools or systems of thinking." Both research project BIWE & MUST-related issues today at SRI! It´s wonderful to be part of the Sustainable Cities Discussion Forum in Understanding and Monitoring Sustainability at a Neighborhood Level! Sustainable neighbourhoods are communities where environmental responsibility, social justice, and economic viability are realized. The need to promote genuine, sustainable development at the neighbourhood level has been widely recognized, yet thus far, scientifically researched indicators for measuring sustainability at this level have typically not been available. The Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies Urbaria's new book, "Towards More Sustainable Urban Areas – Sustainability Indicators for Neighborhoods and Blocks", is a conversation starter to solve this problem. The book includes contributions from 34 leading Finnish researchers on how local sustainability challenges can best be identified, measured, and addressed. At our workshop, following a short presentation of the book, three researchers will present their chosen indicators for monitoring sustainability in urban neighborhoods. After each presentation we will have an interactive discussion on implementing these monitoring tools, as well as the actions citizens can take to improve the sustainability challenges highlighted by them. Programme: 13:50-14:00 New Book: Towards More Sustainable Urban Areas – Sustainability Indicators for Neighborhoods and Blocks Jussi Jännes, Coordinator, Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies Urbaria1 4:00-14:35 Indicator 1: The Socioeconomic Status of Energy Community Members Eva Heiskanen, Professor of Sustainable Consumption, University of Helsinki 14:35-15:10 Indicator 2: The Amount of Urban Dead Wood Laura Uimonen, University Instructor, Faculty of Built Environment, Tampere University 15:10-15:45 Indicator 3: The Ratio of Impervious Surfaces to Permeable Surfaces Kim Yrjälä, Adjunct Professor, Environmental Microbiology, University of Helsinki
