I was talking to a founder last night at Ny tech week dinner and they were trying to figure out how to get started. The advice I gave them is the advice I always give, just get started and figure out what you don't know. Start doing user research to understand in-depth your problem statement. Figure out what is the smallest, cheapest solution you can build that solves that problem. So often founders focus on things that will take them years to get to and the metrics that they have been told VCs want to hear. I hear in office hours, "I want X in ARR and Y users. I am building the #1 platform for Z" instead of "This is the value I want to create. This is the problem I am trying to solve." I get why but focusing n what you think others want to hear doesn't help you understand what to build and why. It also often means that you waste a lot of time and money building what sounds good instead of what customers need.
