It was a full house at the Cement and Lime Decarbonation Workshop last week hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory. Solidia’s Senior Director of Strategy and Business Development, Pradeep Ghosh, presented our supplementary cementitious material (SCM) project funded by a DOE grant. 🌱   After a two-year journey, the project concluded in March 2023. The grant helped us to develop our carbonation process and produce a high-performance, engineered SCM. Solidia SCM is an effective alternative to fly ash as a partial Portland cement replacement in ready-mix concrete. Our process permanently captures anthropogenic CO2 and can reduce the embodied CO2 of concrete by 25 to 35%.🔄 #SolidiaSolutions #co2reduction #embodiedcarbon #cementindustry #flyash #concreteindustry

CAPTURING CARBON is critical to the cement industry’s #decarbonisation plans, given that most emissions come from the chemical reactions in the process rather than burning fuel. Yesterday, our Policy Advisor Hanna Biro moderated a stakeholder roundtable discussion on CO2 infrastructure governance organised as part of the Just Transition Platform WG Cement. 🌍🏭 During the discussion, the participants from the cement sector, local and national authorities shared their experience on the ground, including obstacles they face when it comes to #CO2Infrastructure deployment and potential solutions and ways to overcome them in order to allow for the full decarbonisation of cement production in their regions. 🤝📊 The results of the lively and fruitful discussion will be compiled by the WG into a recommendation paper to the European Commission on the actions needed to establish the multi-level governance of CO2 infrastructure in order to allow these especially vulnerable regions relying on cement production to rapidly decarbonize. 📜🔍 Many thanks to the JTP WG Cement secretariat for facilitating the discussion! The owner of the world’s largest CO2 pipeline is building a key new artery running through the heartland of heavy industry in Alberta. Wolf Midstream, which owns and operates the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL), says construction has commenced on a 40-kilometre pipeline extension through Alberta’s Industrial Heartland northeas of Edmonton, a heavy industry hub with more than 40 plants that produce fuel, fertilizers, hydrogen, petrochemicals and other products. The cement industry will need carbon capture to reach net zero. That’s a fact. Which means it’s also likely to need oxyfuel. Let’s explain: 👇   As long as cement production involves the calcination of limestone, it’s going to release CO2. That’s an inevitable result of the process chemistry. As these emissions cannot be avoided – unlike those associated with the combustion of fossil fuels – they must be captured.   And this is where oxyfuel will play a critical role. Oxyfuel is essentially a way of operating the cement plant to maximize the concentration of CO2 in the exhaust gas. It thus makes carbon capture easier and cheaper to implement.   That said, the switch to oxyfuel combustion does pose challenges and will have to be tailored to your specific plant layout and process conditions.
