The National Reconciliation Week (NRW) theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue. There have been many moments in Australia’s reconciliation journey that make us want to turn away. But when things are divisive, the worst thing we can do is disengage or disconnect. Now more than ever, we need to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation. We know that the 6.2 million Australians who voted YES are committed to better outcomes for First Nations people, and are with us. Reconciliation supporters must stand up to defend and uphold the rights of First Nations peoples. To call out racism wherever we encounter it, and to actively reinforce the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across this continent. Now more than ever, the work continues. In treaty making, in truth-telling, in understanding our history, in education, and in tackling racism. We need connection. We need respect. We need action. And we need change. Now more than ever, we need reconciliation. Read more about NRW: https://loom.ly/QVuMkwU

Join Me, Lee Jasper, in Building a New Politics for the Future Dear Friends, I've spent my career fighting racism and advocating for Black and Asian communities. If you're concerned about the future of the UK, its people, and our planet, I invite you to join an online discussion about our recent work. As part of the Humanity Project, I bring an anti-racist perspective, addressing the dangers racism poses to democracy, the climate crisis, and the cost-of-living issues. Why This Matters Britain faces significant challenges in social care, health, the economy, housing, and the environment, exacerbated post-Brexit. The current political system is failing us, and we must create a new, more radical democracy that empowers ordinary people. The Movement The Humanity Project supports grassroots Popular Assemblies nationwide to foster diversity, inclusion, and real democratic reforms. These assemblies aim to build alliances and generate new ideas, culminating in Britain’s Popular Assembly—a national body of informed citizens managing governance. Why Now? As the 2024 general election approaches, it’s clear that British democracy needs radical reform. Public trust in politicians is at an all-time low, and issues like the climate emergency and rising racism demand urgent action. When mainstream democracy fails, extremism thrives. The Importance of Anti-Racism Racism threatens our democracy by undermining equality and justice. Combating racism is crucial to ensuring a fair, democratic society where every voice is heard and valued. A New Politics of Unity The Humanity Project seeks to unite diverse movements, including Black Lives Matter, climate change activists, and anti-poverty campaigners, to create a new democratic system capable of addressing today’s existential challenges. The Bedrock of Our Alliance The Humanity Project is supported by leaders like @ClaireFarrell from Extinction Rebellion, @NickGardham of the Cost-of-Living Alliance, and myself, representing Blaksox and other Black organizations. Together, we aim to forge a path toward a more just and inclusive society. The Path Forward We envision a radical 21st-century democracy built on progressive, egalitarian, and anti-racist principles. By coming together, we can create a politics that truly works for everyone. Event Details Date: Monday, 17th June 2024 Time: 7 pm – 8.30 pm Register: https://lnkd.in/ea3UFuRB Join me to explore this transformative movement and be part of a national conversation about the change we need. Warm regards, Lee Jasper Humanity Project Core Team

National Reconciliation Week is a pivotal period for fostering understanding, respect, and unity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. This week serves as a profound reminder of our collective responsibility to acknowledge and learn from the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We must acknowledge colonisation and encourage all Australians to reflect on the painful impacts of past injustices and to commit to meaningful actions that promote equality and inclusivity. By engaging in open dialogue and education we can build stronger, more compassionate and cohesive communities. National Reconciliation Week is not just a time for reflection, but a call to action to contribute to a future where reconciliation is a reality, ensuring a more just, more united Australia for all.

Certain concepts such as solidarity sound like ‘ancient régime’ today, but there is truth behind it’s concept. “… The 19th-century thinkers who began seriously contemplating and writing about the idea of solidarity often used the image of the human body, where different parts work in tandem. Most famously, the French sociologist Émile Durkheim put solidarity at the center of his inquiry. … But as Durkheim himself would eventually recognize, the industrial economy that he initially imagined would generate solidarity would actually serve to weaken its fragile ties, fostering what he called anomie, the corrosive hopelessness that accompanied growing inequality. In the United States, solidarity never achieved the same intellectual cachet as in Europe. Since this nation’s founding, the concept has generally been neglected, and the practice actively suppressed and even criminalized. Attempts to forge cross-racial solidarity have met with violent suppression time and again, and labor organizing, effectively outlawed until the New Deal era, still occupies hostile legal ground. … … As our profit-driven economy has made us more insecure and atomized — and more susceptible to authoritarian appeals — the far right has seized its opportunity. …”

Sharing for my sister Emma Marks @ The Equality Trust: "The UK’s inequality is damaging all parts of our economy and society, while creating enormous profit for the rich and powerful. We can only solve our struggling economy and hurt communities by making our society more equal. We campaign nationally and locally to create a fair society for all." Til jer der interesserer jer for hvad #deliberativtdemokrati #borgersamlinger og #borgerting kan i forhold til de rigtigt store samfunds problemer Tak for at dele Claudia Chwalisz "This, then, is my wish for the year ahead: that we mend national- and local-level divisions through citizens’ assemblies, and that we bring the same stakeholder approach to our international institutions. We must move quickly if we are to solve the major challenges of our time, from climate change and rising inequality to slowing growth and new concentrations of power—all of which threaten the wellbeing of citizens everywhere." 🇪🇺What is the socioeconomic burden of hate? We have not yet calculated the effects. However, we are convinced that ideologies based on inequalities severely impact our society, the economy, and individual well-being. The upcoming European election is about more than political affiliations; it’s about the society we want to build. It’s about standing for commonality, respect, and progress. At WifOR Institute, our 80 colleagues come from over 15 nations on four continents. Without them, our international research would not have achieved the value and quality it has today – and our organization would not be the cohesive community it has grown into. We know the value of diversity and inclusion and are committed to fostering it in other organizations and society. Let’s choose a path of unity, inclusivity, and progress. Let’s reject division and fear. Together, let’s build a better, stronger Europe for all. 🗳️Use your vote! Unsure who to vote for? Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week. ANZSOG supports this year’s theme of ‘Now More Than Ever’ and the need for strengthening relationships between First Nations and non-Indigenous Australians. We are working to build understanding across the public services of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand of the value and importance of First Nations history, culture and knowledge and the need for genuine partnerships and shared decision-making between governments and First Nations communities. This week is a chance for us all to recognise significant milestones in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples fight for equality and justice, and the work that remains to be done. https://lnkd.in/d3hGDGY6
