I recently spoke on a panel at the Sankalp Global Summit 2023 on the fashion industry's role in fostering a just and inclusive transition to circular fashion. I emphasized the crucial importance of responsible consumption. Did you know that fashion production comprises 10% of total global carbon emissions, and that the apparel industry’s global emissions are set to increase by 50% by 2030? This is why circularity is essential. From sustainable materials to ethical practices, the fashion industry can make a positive impact on the environment and people's lives. Responsible for 20% of industrial water pollution and ranking as the second-largest polluter of clean water globally, the Textile's Industry is in this week's Industry Spotlight at Nossa Data. Fast fashion is a global environmental and social issue effecting millions of people around the world. In this post, the Fashion Transparency Index sheds light on 250 major fashion brands and their high levels of consumption and production and lack of transparency within their worldwide supply chains. In recent years, Sustainable Fashion has become more accessible and mainstream with the growing trend of consumer consciousness around the effects of fast fashion on people and the environment. As someone who is seeking more sustainable fashion choices, I really enjoyed putting this blog post together. It explores ESG frameworks & standards in the Textiles Industry as well as upcoming European regulation on Circular Economy and illegal waste exports. 🔄 FASHION INDUSTRY SUSTAINABILITY AMBITION: A THIRD OF FASHION EXECS THINK THEIR FIRMS WILL BE FULLY CIRCULAR IN A FEW YEARS 🔄 A recent study, conducted by Aquapak Polymers Ltd, surveyed board directors and senior executives from fashion brands and retailers in the UK, US, and Australia, revealing their circularity ambitions. ♦ Full circularity timeline: 12% anticipate full circularity within 1-2 years, 34% within 2-3 years, and 31% within 3-4 years, with 1/5 aiming for 4-5 years. ♦ Circularity strategy assessment: 32% rate their circularity strategy as excellent, 54% as good, and 14% as average, indicating room for improvement. ♦ Sustainability leadership: 54% see their business as a sustainability market leader and innovator, 39% as average or followers, and 7% as laggards playing catch-up. ♦ Sustainability's business impact: 49% deem sustainability highly important, but only 21% rate the effectiveness of their sustainability strategy as excellent. ♦ Reducing Polyethylene plastic: 37% consider reducing polyethylene plastic in packaging highly important for their sustainability strategy. I would have liked to have more insights about how these firms plan concretely to achieve their circularity goals. Ambition and execution are two different things. Let's keep a close eye on how these ambitions translate into concrete actions.
