US DHS has redesignated Syria for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, from April 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. A country may be designated for TPS there (1) is an ongoing armed conflict; (2) are environmental disasters or (3) are extraordinary and temporary conditions. Syria’s designation is based on ongoing armed conflict, human rights abuses by Syrian regime forces, terrorist groups and other non-state actors, food insecurity, spread of disease and mass displacement. The extension of TPS for Syria allows approximately 6,200 current beneficiaries to retain TPS through September 5, 2025 and allows for an estimated 2,000 additional Syrian nationals for redesignation. They can obtain work authorization and DHS is automatically extending some of their work authorization through March 31, 2025. https://lnkd.in/enWC7iJX #USCIS #USimmigration #USVisas #TPS #immigrationlawyer #Syria

Regardless of any other strategic goal or agenda is all humanitarian aid welcome. However, for now, building a pier means a delay of immediate action, at times when people are in very urgent direct need of large scale aid. The aid could be "easily" delivered overland (this delay is supporting the IDF strategy of a siege). An alternative and much better solution could be to evacuate the displaced Palestinians from Gaza to Israel (disarmed) and bring them to a temporary (UN-peace-force controlled and UNHCR managed) safe zone in Israel. This sounds odd, but has its logic: Gaza has meanwhile become uninhabitable and is for now no longer a realistic relocation option. Doing so, the IDF could dismantle all Hamas military facilities in Gaza without causing any additional civilian collateral damage. Further, such scenario would very likely enable Palestinian civilians to return home as soon as this becomes feasible again (which may take a while). Finally, I wonder if the pier is/was part of Netanyahu's strategy from the beginning see: https://lnkd.in/dHY9Zskg. What Gazans really need is an immediate ceasefire as a first step on the road to sustainable peace and to realize that there is no future for Israel (and Palestine) based on the narratives of radicals..... Anyone who wants to claim territory and expansion exclusively for themselves will only find eternal war, violence and destruction, whereas the moderates hold the key to sustainable peace by non-violent interaction and dialog as equals. Only this second scenario will bring prosperity for all. www.convergence.ngo & www.pax.ngo

Asked about the recent mortar attack, the miliary official said the U.S. assesses it had nothing to do with the humanitarian mission, adding that security around the port will be “far more robust” when the deliveries start.
A US-led effort to bring aid to Gaza by sea is moving forward. But big concerns remain

Over the past year, and more recently, past months, the number of threats, attacks, and deaths of humanitarians and medical aid workers has risen. The targeting of humanitarians by armed groups and non-state actors and people caught in crossfire in volatile and conflict zones has heightened, and in turn, has hindered their ability to reach those in need and deliver much-needed aid. To highlight a few recent events and statements: 📌 World Food Programme: https://lnkd.in/eA845t88 📌 Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF): https://lnkd.in/eZhYUNcn 📌 Insecurity Insight: https://lnkd.in/eksRN49F As we continue to grapple with complex humanitarian challenges, it remains imperative to equip humanitarians and aid workers with security awareness and tools to deal with the risks present in their environments. Protecting the safety and security of NGO and FBO staff is a critical factor in ensuring the effective delivery of humanitarian aid and support to the most vulnerable populations across the globe. #notatarget #humanitarianaid #security #threats #risks #safety #aid #healthworkers #ngo #fbo #conflict #volatile #hostile #environments #report #awareness #equip #global #crisismanagement #crisiscommunications

To be crystal clear- almost every single issue the pier faced had been repeatedly and at all levels underlined as risks by #humanitarian organizations who were working in #Gaza. The violence, the focus of fighting, its military character, the destruction of whole neighborhoods for its security, the lack of specific connetions to the logistics infrastructure of the strip, and the lack of sustainability which is a main requirement for aid organizations to trust enough to pivot their pipelines to Cyprus and this maritime corridor. There were no surprises, only challenges and a lot of harm done; and yes- a day's worth of aid.

Myanmar has endured prolonged conflict for decades, pitting government forces against non-state armed groups primarily organised along ethnic lines. By October 2023, three prominent armed factions in the North East joined together to accelerate confrontations with the government. Coordinated attacks flared in other regions, including South East and Rakhine states, significantly amplifying civilian casualties and humanitarian needs within the nation. Read on to learn four reasons why the IRC’s Emergency Watchlist ranks Myanmar as one of the countries most at risk of experiencing a worsening humanitarian crisis in 2024: https://lnkd.in/eGghEexF

#Haiti 🇭🇹: on Monday, The United Nations Security Council authorized a foreign security mission to Haiti - https://lnkd.in/dGuQsJdj, a year after the Caribbean country asked for help to fight violent gangs that have largely overrun its capital #PortauPrince. The 15-member council adopted a resolution, drafted by the #UnitedStates and #Ecuador, that authorizes the so-called Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission "to take all necessary measures" - code for use of force. https://lnkd.in/esWFEnwe #China and #Russia abstained from the vote, wary of authorizing the blanket use of force under Chapter 7 of the founding U.N. Charter. The remaining 13 members voted in favor. The Security Council also expanded a U.N. arms embargo to include all gangs - a measure China wanted. Haitian officials have said guns used by gangs are believed to be mostly imported from the United States. The embargo previously only applied to specific individuals. The response to Haiti's request for help was delayed due to a struggle to find a country willing to lead a security assistance mission. #Kenya stepped forward in July with a pledge of 1,000 police. The #Bahamas then committed 150 people, while #Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda are also willing to help. Foreign Affairs Minister Alfred Mutua has said he hopes Kenyan police officers will arrive in Haiti by January, but authorities from the East African country have shared few additional details about the mission. 🚨Travel and work abroad are associated with security risks that can come from many different sources and their impact on people and business can be devastating.
