I’ve just been reading Chris Husbands clear and compelling articulation of a manifesto for HE in Higher Education Policy Institute’s Election 2024 booklet in which he makes the case for universities as ‘critical players in shaping the future economy’ and ‘central’ to realising a vision for the UK as the ‘knowledge-intensive high-skilled economy the future demands’. The choice ahead of us on 4th July is about leadership - who do we trust to lead us through the turbulence we are facing now and into a more positive and secure future? However, anyone who has read How Westminster Works: and why it doesn’t by Ian Dunt will know that the system, the assumptions and the structures are stacked against the sort of joined up policy making that is desperately needed. With none of the manifestos so far putting an integrated vision for education with HE’s ‘connection to skills, place and policy’ at their heart, it is hard to feel positive and secure. Chris’ manifesto for mobilising universities to drive a high skills society is exciting and achievable but the selfless, collaborative, integrative and values driven leadership needed to achieve it requires urgent attention and courage at every level of leadership, governance and management in our policy, funding, regulatory and place-based organisations. It is indeed time for a change. #leadership #timeforachange

#FridayThought Sitting at Edinburgh Futures Institute Canopy Cafe at The University of Edinburgh, as "a citizen," I am reflecting on the results of the UK General Elections. Post-Brexit general elections in the UK and other countries like France have seen people strongly want change, whether or not I agree with the outcome personally. This participation highlights a public eager for new policies and better governance. In the corporate world, similarly, shareholders decide the company's future by voting on key issues. Ultimately, the public trust to the leadership, manifested in share transactions, determines the fate of a corporate. This transparency ensures that leaders are accountable to those with a financial stake in the business. The higher education sector is utterly different. It's a huge industry, worth billions, sitting typically between private sector and the government. University leaders aren't just accountable to students and staff, but also to government bodies, donors, and the wider community. In my opinion, leadership in higher education, at various levels, could be more accountable for the decisions made during their tenure to ensure the sector's long-term sustainability. Hearing the voices of the academic body would provide valuable insights and help leaders make informed and balanced decisions going forward. This approach not only addresses the current financial challenges in the sector but also ensures that policies and practices reflect the needs and aspirations of the academic community, staff, and students. Nothing is forever, and adaptability is key to enduring success.

It was inspiring to join this cross-sector conversation on what it will take to move towards #equity in education in Massachusetts. I especially appreciated Turahn Dorsey's depiction of authentic learning environments as those that start with strengths (not deficits), create capabilities, immerse students in experiences, and expose young people to "master teachers" who may be industry practitioners, community historians, and other mentors. My thanks to the various excellent panelists and speakers from whom I gained these takeaways: - individually, we - as students and lifelong learners - need confidence and a belief in ourselves that we can do it - collectively, we - as business, political and educational leaders - need to collaborate and demonstrate the will power to make real change happen.

As higher education institutions across the nation face significant operational and financial pressures, leaders are considering or actively implementing major restructuring strategies. A new TIAA Institute-sponsored paper examines the forces reshaping academia and the competencies required of those leading large-scale change. What a stimulating meeting with Shaun McAlpine (Director - Trade & Investment, Americas - Investment NSW), who was so generous with his time and insights with Michael Blumenstein and I in #sanfrancisco this morning. We focused a lot of our discussion upon #industry, NSW government and #university collaboration to address the talent needs for tech and defence-industry companies based in the #US and #Australia, especially #NSW and #Sydney. From the University of Technology Sydney perspective, and especially that of a collaborative UTS Faculty of Engineering and IT and UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) mindset, we saw the opportunity for us to take a distinctive role in catalyzing a #stepchange beyond the current "organic growth" assumptions for #tech companies based in Sydney who have global aspirations. For example, there are urgent and systemic workforce pipeline needs that can be better met through university offerings like work integrated learning (WIL) and capstone subjects for our students, as well as the prerogative for companies to become "sticky" for their current employees in a highly competitive market for talent. On this point, strengthening workforce culture through professional development and training will be critical, such as via the various industry co-designed courses that the UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) offers. We were also excited by the possibilities of leveraging the resources and innovation from the US and Australia to the mutual benefit of both countries, and especially within the context of #AUKUS. There is a significant capital investment gap that needs to be addressed for the betterment of defence, national security and the national interest of Australia and the region. Tech Central Sydney was also discussed, and how #UTS can lead ideation that looks both at a precinct lens and "beyond the neighborhood", leveraging the relationships we continue to build with industry and government.
