As we look back at the summer, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to our interns for their valuable contributions to our team. Their presence has truly brightened our days, and as their time with us concludes, we're thrilled to reflect on the remarkable moments they've shared. Next up: Brady Allen who interned with our Parks Permits Department! Q: What is one thing you learned from your internship at Montgomery Parks? A: "I've developed an understanding of the importance of each division and how they all work together to help run a multi-million-dollar park system." Q: What is your proudest accomplishment/moment from your internship? A: "I am quite proud of my contributions to the updates on our park fields. I was able to help determine current field sizes and their associated sport, which will help customers better understand our fields during the reservation process. " Q: What was your favorite experience? A: "I thoroughly enjoyed using satellite images to look at and study our fields. This experience allowed me to recognize and appreciate all of the amazing facilities our residents have at their disposal. " Q: Any advice for new interns? A: "Don't be afraid to ask questions. At first, you are not familiar with all the policies of the office. By asking questions it helped me become so much more familiar with how things are run. Your coworkers are there to help you and trust me, they are more than willing to help!"

Wednesday alert! If you are an employer (with a recruitment headache) I'd like to introduce you to a pool of talent you've possibly overlooked - and possibly you're not even aware of. As Chair for the Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council Forum for Supported Internships - I'm continuing a journey of enlightenment! Working with a team of true collaborators I'm hearing great stories of how #SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) individuals are making a positive difference to employers locally. Here's one such example from Mencap's Mia Smith - who is (quietly) celebrating starting a learning and employment programme for a group of Supported Interns. I know the employers involved will benefit massively for example - ✳ they'll be tapping into a pool of talent that they were unlikely to have reached before ✳ there's a high chance they will recruit the right person to the right job ✳ their own customer base will appreciate their efforts and commitment to diversity and inclusivity ✳ 77% think more highly of companies that make an extra effort to employ disabled people - helping make them an employer of choice ✳ staff will learn new skills and are more likely to respond better to a more diverse team ... and so much more! Overcoming challenges to find work is a huge achievement. This is so often reflected in benefitting from an individual's positive attitudes, enthusiasm, willingness to learn and loyalty. I've been quiet... It's so busy here at Mencap Birmingham Supported Internships. We are preparing for our third cohort who are starting in 2 weeks' time. We are welcoming lots of new learners and I've been chipping away in the background along with the rest of the team getting things ready! We have some exciting new partnerships with local employers this year which I can't wait to share. Watch this space 😁

The first week of summer vacation for my kids is here. We're gearing up for summer camps and activities. This time of year takes me back to my college internship, where I ran sports camps for the local YMCA. We started and ended each day by reviewing the core values: Caring Respect Honesty Responsibility. We would talk about these as we opened the day, and at the end of the day, we would ask if anyone saw any of the campers displaying these behaviors. Those who did were rewarded with a little prize and a round of applause. If organizations reward and recognize core values, they will continue to permeate through the organization. Think about what behaviors are being rewarded and emulated and which ones you want to be magnified.
Embrace every opportunity to absorb knowledge and skills. Actively engage in tasks, ask questions and seek out new experiences!
