Before becoming president U.S. Grant: Attended West Point after a Cadet from his county in Ohio was expelled. He noted his indifference to military life and planned to resign his commission after the four-year obligation. He fought in the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848 which he opposed, detailing the experience as being "one of the most unjust wars ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation." He married Julia Dent, the daughter of a slave owner. When the couple underwent financial stress Julia and Ulysses spent time living on the Dent property, subjecting him first hand to the realities of slavery. When Grant was ordered to sail from New York City to California traveling overland through Panama, a cholera outbreak took place and Grant witnessed first hand the loss of a thousand troops that, in his opinion, had been sent to their death by the Army. In California, Grant got into trouble on more than one occasion for this drinking and ultimately resigned his commission and returned to St. Louis with no money and little opportunity to provide for his family. From 1856 to 1861 Grant tried his hand unsuccessfully as an entrepreneur and ended up being forced into a job in his fathers leather goods store. In 1861, the Civil War began. Grant after 39 years of hardship and a disdain for slavery, took his experiences and rose to the rank of General of the Army of the United States. In 1869 Grant became President of the United States. Punch Line: It's possible we learn as much from the low points in life as we do from the highs. Attending HBS and working at a Fortune 500 company isn't requisite to accomplishing your ultimate goal. Study the hardships, the bad culture, and poor leaders with the same tenacity that you study great ones. Who you are today isn't who or what you'll will ultimately become. "The doing and the artifacts of that doing are only derivatives of how you exist in the world and who you truly are for your family, your profession and your life." #veterans #veteranmentalhealth #writing #veterantransition

When we first launched Grayson Lewis we shared some insights into Nick Henbrey’s career and how he went from serving in the Royal Navy as a Submariner to launching a Financial Planning practice… While he was in the Navy Nick bought his first house with his wife Kirsty, and they remortgaged a couple of years later. Both experiences were so poor and he came away thinking he wasn’t really sure what he had signed up to, why, or if he had been ripped off. He thought he could do a better job, so he decided to put his money where his mouth is and go for it 🙌 What’s more, when Nick came back from deployment he had some surplus money and savings for pretty much the first time. So he started reading up on things he could do. It snowballed from buy to let, to the financial markets and it made him realise just how poor most people's knowledge is because we aren't taught about money management. With this in mind, Nick wants to empower people by sharing his knowledge and help people to make well-informed decisions about their finances. At Grayson Lewis everything we do is underpinned by integrity. For us, integrity means putting the client and their best interests at the centre of absolutely everything we do. #FinancialPlanning #InvestmentPlanning #WealthManagement

https://lnkd.in/eG_nuwTr #ArmedForcesFriday This is kind of early for Memorial Day, which is a month out, but it's a topic I like to visit before we all make plans. 159 years ago on April 26th, 1865 the largest surrender of Confederate troops during the US Civil war took place when General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered his forces to General William Tecumseh Sherman. Like many conflicts, the US Civil war ended not with a single victory or surrender, but a number of them. General Robert E. Lee surrendered earlier at Appomattox to General Grant, which is often seen as the "end of the war" though it took a few months to truly conclude. One of the more colorful and successful Confederate leaders, Colonel John S. Mosby, never surrendered his forces, instead he disbanded it and sent his Soldiers home to surrender individually, with Mosby himself surrendering in June. Johnston's surrender negotiations began on April 17th, shortly after the assassination of US President Lincoln, and it would take until the 26th to conclude (under threat of reopening hostilities). There were a few more battles after this event, as well as the eventual capture of Jefferson Davis in May. I studied a few of these battles during my time at the Maneuver Captain Career Course and visited one of them. This was slightly haunting, as they seemed to be a series of one-upmanship in destruction. We have the memoirs of the leaders who often knew each other personally. Some of them graduated the US Military Academy, others served together in the US Army in the antebellum period. But that's just one of the tragedies of this conflict. In the end we get to look back on history as an example, both for small events as well as large ones. Most of the time we get to step back and evaluate them from a distance, without ties. I had several ancestors who fought for the Union during this conflict, one survived the infamous Andersonville prison. Sometimes learning about your history and visiting these places frames them differently, no longer passages in a textbook but standing in fields long after the guns fell silent and Soldiers went home. It's worth the time to travel and reflect, especially since most of these places are open for visitors and preserved as historic landmarks. Something to consider for this upcoming #MemorialDay.

One of the toughest things with policy implementations, in my opinion, is the qualifiers for what projects must adhere to new regs. People and projects spend all their time and insights justifying why they don’t meet the parameters for having to comply! We need to rip off the bandaide, or put away the crutches, or whatever metaphor you want to use. We know we MUST reduce embodied and operational carbon. There is no need to debate this further. All design and construction projects should comply, starting now, for the four most egregious materials (asphalt, concrete, glass, steel). Architects and engineers are clever and can figure this out! In fact, many of us are begging for the opportunity to do better work and to innovate. Industry will adjust quickly when they see they must. It will be messy in the short term, but sending wishy-washy signals is never effective. And, BTW, if you want messy, just keep using those bandaide tweak improvements…and watch our future disappear under the weight of CO2e. Lots of messy already underway… If you want to give it a ramp up, state now that all design and construction must reduce embodied carbon for these four materials starting by June 2024, no exceptions. Watch the changes. Designers will start to treat concrete as gold, and use cement and concrete much more effectively. They will innovate structural systems, and reduce layers of materiality. They will invest in GGP (ground glass pozzolans) and other non-toxic supplemental cementitious materials . They will support mass timber, hemp insulation, and systems-thinking for material GROWTH instead of caustic extraction. They (we) will mess some things up, but the industry will learn fast. Make it so!

In the last few months, I've been working fairly hard on supporting a bill that would impact 50,000 combat-wounded veterans. I've been pushing articles to everyone who would open my emails and even to people who would not. As a writer who just so happens to have been wounded in combat, I tried to leverage my abilities to tell the story the way I saw it so that our lawmakers would do what is right. In another life, I work in film. I took my limited editing skills and compiled a message that everyone can watch and understand what the Major Richard Star Act (MRSA) is all about and how they can get involved. To be frank, our lawmakers are not doing what needs to be done in a lot of aspects. MRSA has overwhelming co-sponsorship from other lawmakers in both the Senate and House and it would pass if they took it to a floor vote. However, our Congress has been operating at a record low since 1973 and has only passed a handful of bills. We have to ask ourselves, if they are unwilling to help with what is typically a bipartisan matter, what can we expect them to do with issues they are split on? It is time to light fires under them and get them to do their jobs. Tell them to pass MRSA now. #majorrichardstaract #mrsa #veterans #combatveteran #congress #senate https://lnkd.in/gCguE5M4
