On June 28, the governor of Pennsylvania has signed Stuffed Toy Manufacturing Act - Manufacturing, Materials, Enforcement, Labeling, Report (Act of Jun. 28, 2024, P.L. 417, No. 30). This Act lifts a long-held ban on the use of recycled materials in all stuffed toys manufactured and sold within the state. Section 5 specifies that all material used in stuffed toys shall be new or recycled material and free from dangerous or harmful chemicals or other substances and shall be free from oil, dirt, refuse and similar substances. The term "recycled material" shall mean any material that has been reprocessed from reclaimed material by means of a manufacturing process and made into a final product or into a component for incorporation into a final product. The copacker will take advantage of you. Much like you take advantage of your customers. It’s business and I think we all forget we’re in it to make money. If it weren’t, then you’d be absolutely ok with breaking even on every SKU you sell. If it weren’t, you wouldn’t bake shipping into your pricing and advertise it as “free shipping” 😲 The same applies to copackers. They want and need to make money. Of course there will be up charges in certain aspects of their manufacturing flow. It’s up to you to ask for clarity on it all. It’s up to you to understand where you can reduce some of the up charge. Turnkey costs are a great example. If something isn’t making sense. Ask. Ask. Ask.
