The US Department of Energy has released a national definition for zero-emissions buildings. This standardized definition provides consistency and clarity to the #netzero transition, supporting the real estate value chain in achieving and identifying the lowest-carbon buildings. ULI's Marta Schantz, Co-Executive Director of the Randall Lewis Center for Sustainability in Real Estate said: "This move by the federal government is a step forward in encouraging and accelerating the building sector’s journey to net zero, laying the crucial groundwork for the industry’s broader strategy to meet climate goals, ensuring all stakeholders have a unified understanding of what constitutes a zero emissions building." Very interesting report on #embodiedcarbon from one of our team; a great example of how we help our Clients achieve optimal project outcomes. Please get in touch if you would like to learn more #equalsconsulting #projectmanagement #quantitysurveying
In our latest industry report, Patrick Carter looks at how we can help teams look at the relative cost of lower embodied carbon materials early in the design phase. No-one in the built-environment sector can be in any doubt: the climate emergency is real and it is our collective duty to respond. The stats are alarming. The World Green Building Council says that buildings are responsible for 39% of carbon emissions worldwide. 🌍 On the eve of Zero Emissions Day, as the world united for climate action, the UK government shifted its stance on net-zero commitments. We delved deeper into the implications of this rollback for the built environment. Consider this: 🏙️ The built environment is responsible for a staggering 40% of global carbon emissions, underscoring the urgency of sustainability. 📈 Green buildings hold the potential for a 21% higher asset value, an 11.6% boost in rents, and reduced utility costs. 🌳 Interestingly, the UK government's lukewarm approach stands in stark contrast to the public's enthusiastic support for sustainability. Our commitment is clear: We're here to assist real estate developers and managers in embracing sustainability, driving profitability, and fostering social value. Take inspiration from cities like New York, where they've introduced a carbon tax for large urban buildings, set to begin in 2024, making building owners accountable for their emissions. As major companies race to achieve ambitious net-zero targets by 2030, we're here to help them every step of the way! Important discussion!
Toronto City Councillor. Last Environmental Commissioner of Ontario. Climate/ Environmental Lawyer. Green Economy Heroes. Working for a liveable future.
The City of Toronto’s Net Zero Existing Building Strategy aims to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions from the building sector to Net Zero by 2040. The City is developing a by-law which will require all buildings 6,458 ft2 (600m2) and larger to annually report energy and water use as a first step in accelerating the net-zero retrofits required to meet this target. Building owners and interested parties can provide their feedback by taking the online survey on emissions performance reporting requirements, hosted by Environics Research Group here: https://lnkd.in/d6U_Mr2j?
Thank you for taking the time to fill out this survey for The City of Toronto’s TransformTO Net Zero Strategy team.

In a report by the World Green Building Council, buildings are currently responsible for some 39% of global energy related carbon emissions, of which 28% is from operational emissions and the remaining 11% from materials and construction. Read the report here: https://signify.co/3SBjb5j This makes buildings an important component of a country’s climate change mitigation strategy and directly contribute to more efficient energy use. Lighting is the quickest and simplest component of building renovation. DECARBONIZATION - Word of the week! 🌍 🏢 Decarbonization, simply put, is the process of reducing carbon emissions to combat climate change. In essence, it involves transitioning away from fossil fuel-based energy sources and adopting cleaner, more sustainable alternatives. The building sector plays a significant role in carbon emissions, contributing nearly 40% of global energy-related CO2 emissions. This staggering figure underscores the critical importance of decarbonizing the built environment. As we strive to address climate change, it's imperative that we prioritize sustainable solutions within the construction industry. Excited to see initiatives like "Peeb Cool" (launched last week by Programme for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB) at the Buildings and Climate Global Forum, in Paris,) gaining traction, aiming to boost energy-efficient and climate-resilient buildings across 11 countries. This aligns perfectly with our broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainability in the built environment. Let's continue pushing for innovative solutions and collaborative efforts to decarbonize the building sector. Together, we can build a greener, more sustainable future for all. #Decarbonization #Sustainability #GreenBuilding #ClimateAction

If you want to discuss long-term decarbonization strategies of your individual assets or the entire portfolio, reach out to us! #Apleona #GreenRealEstate #digitalization #decarbonization
We are pleased to announce that we have recently released the new tool "Decarbonisation Path Positioning" on our customer portal - complementing our extensive digital Green Real Estate solutions portfolio. The EU sets itself ambitious #decarbonisation goals to achieve #climate neutrality by 2050. As the #realestate sector is responsible for about one third of all CO2 emissions, specific decarbonisation target pathways per country and building type have been developed to achieve this goal. In just a few minutes, our new tool allows building owners to visualize the CO2 emissions of their buildings and position them against the decarbonisation pathways. The Decarbonisation Path Positioning Tool ✔ Helps our clients assess the stranding risk of their assets (stranded assets are assets at risk of premature economic obsolescence due to failure to meet sustainability requirements) ✔ Creates urgency and guidance on when to act ✔ Provides a starting point for developing a long-term decarbonisation strategy, including specific energy efficiency measures, to reduce CO2 risk factors and avoid climate change impacts. Apleona has developed decarbonisation roadmaps for many clients over the last 20 years. With our digital energy efficiency solutions, such as enerlutec and Recogizer, and our more than 80 #energy #experts, we support our clients in reducing the carbon footprint of their buildings. To learn more about our solutions, contact Thomas Kahlenberg, Michael Lange, Karen Rück, Frank Katzemich, Manuel Gerlach, Carsten Kreutze #decarbonization #greenrealestate #digitalsolutions #facilitymanagement
