I want to share a paper we just published in Cell Matter (Submitted July 2023, *free access til March 20*) demonstrating Human-in-the-Loop for autonomous experiments - work by the brilliant PhD student Felix Adams. At each iteration, the ML provides its current predictions as a diagram. A human expert can then draw their own beliefs on top of that diagram. The human input is then integrated as a probabilistic prior to guide subsequent research. Human input can be integrated at 3 ML stages: data analysis of prior data, prediction, and/or experiment design. Application: Autonomous phase mapping. https://lnkd.in/etgprvag #machinelearning #physics #materialsscience #materialscience #datascience #artificialintelligence #nist #universityofmaryland #umd #mse

Crucial to science education is hands-on involvement: showing, not just telling; real experiments and field trips and not just "virtual reality". #easy #experiments #diy #physics #rankplus #rajkumarrao Rankplus

Another piece of good news at the start of the year! Thrilled to share that a part of my work done during my PhD has been published in Computers and Fluids. I would like to thank my supervisor, Dr. Anthony Wachs, and my colleagues (Damien Huet, Ph.D., Zihao Cheng, Ph.D., Guodong GAI) for their constant support. This work is an extension of my Direction Splitting Solver, which I built for direct numerical simulations of non-spherical rigid bodies in fluid flow. The article can be accessed using the following link: https://lnkd.in/gWedyV4y Please message me if you are interested in learning more. #computationalfluiddynamics #scientificcomputing #highperformancecomputing #fluidmechanics #multiphysics #particleladenflow

When you think of someone who works in physics, does a man in a white coat with wild hair instantly come to mind? How can we expect young people to pursue a career in areas they don’t see themselves reflected in? That’s why our physics careers insight pack, ‘Exploring the World of Physics’ features a whole range of industry professionals explaining their job roles and setting real work-related tasks and learning, including Casey. The pack is free, ideal for students in years 9-11, and can be completed in their own time at their own pace. Solving the mysterious "reflection around paper" internet trend from last year with optics A lot of people were sharing clips similar to the beginning of this video and asking "how does the mirror know the object is there?" While the answer behind this is very simple geometric optics, I think this moment was significant because optics entered the public discussion in a big way (at least for a few weeks) More moments like this can help show how interesting the field of optics is to people who either have absolutely no exposure to it or quickly glossed over it in physics If anyone sees more light-related questions like this bouncing around the internet, please share them so we answer them and keep these conversations going! #Optics #OpticsAndPhotonics #OpticalEngineering #STEM #Science #Physics #STEMForKids #STEMEducation #TikTok #YouTubeShorts
