When I come across young writers who are struggling to write about a topic, or even to chose a topic, I often find that the meaning behind writing has not been explicitly taught. This is not just important for older writers! I think one roadblock to this misfortunate lack of understanding is that teacher's often underestimate the ability of their young writers, and therefore provide them with too much support. They expect that students will not be able to write "own their own", so they give them a prompt or topic, sentence starters and other scaffolds that are most often not needed! So, be sure to include this vital part of teaching writing to our youngsters! #teaching #literacyinstruction #consultant

The toughest obstacle to overcome in teaching strong critical thinking and argumentative structure is that in arguments there is no right or wrong just valid or invalid. We can test for invalidity by assuming that all the premises are true and seeing whether it is still possible for the conclusion to be false. If this is possible, the argument is invalid. Validity and invalidity apply only to arguments, not statements. Once students overcome this, their writing flourishes. As Hamlet teaches, "There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so."
After writers capture my attention in the beginning, as a reader I want them to raise the stakes. Whether students are building an argument, increasing the specificity of description, or raising the intensity of the action, the truism "no stakes, no story" is a great way to teach students the purpose of the middle of section of their writing. Emergent writing is the early stage of writing when children first attempt to communicate. At the initial stage, they scribble, draw, in the process of understanding the forms of writing. At this stage they are also imitating adults in how they write from left to right.
