We won the Health-X Fellowship Prize at the 5th Health-X dataLOFT Innovation Forum last week in Berlin! As part of this recognition, VEIL.AI will collaborate with leading experts from the Health-X dataLOFT consortium. Furthermore, this will open doors to integrate the VEIL.AI Anonymization Engine (VAE) into the Health-X dataLOFT platform. Health-X dataLOFT is tasked with developing a platform suitable for the emerging European Health Data Space (EHDS) in German and Europe. The Health-X Fellowship supports the development and scaling of innovative health solutions - like VEIL.AI’s - that align with the goals of the EHDS and Gaia-X Association for Data and Cloud (AISBL) (Gaia-X Hub Germany). VEIL.AI is capable of providing robust anonymization solutions and tools for GDPR and EHDS-compliant verification of data anonymity, supporting various use cases from research applications to AI/ML model training. The integration of VAE into the Health-X DataLOFT platform will promote secondary data usage and marks a strategic advancement in managing and protecting health data in Europe. By enabling more efficient and secure use of anonymized data, VEIL.AI will drive research and innovation, ensuring that the Health-X platform remains at the forefront of data privacy and utility in alignment with EHDS. As the #DMEA conference is happening this week in Berlin, we are revisiting a topic from our recent healthcare meetup: “Interdisciplinary Teams in Healthcare AI” 👩⚕️ 👨🏭 Today, we want to discuss some challenges and throughout the week we will look at enablers as well as startups that can be useful for this topic. Introducing new roles that bring AI knowledge (e.g.symptom prediction or data analysis of biomarker) to healthcare teams can increase innovation speed and open new opportunities in leveraging data. To make these additions to the team a success one should: 1. 🌉Bridging Knowledge Gaps: Creating a common language and understanding between healthcare professionals and tech experts to facilitate seamless collaboration. 2. 🔍 Maintaining Patient-Centric Focus: Ensuring that technological advancements enhance rather than complicate the patient care experience. 3. 🔒 Data Privacy and Ethics: Navigating the complex landscape of data privacy and ethical considerations inherent in using AI in healthcare. 4. 📁Regulatory Compliance: Keeping pace with evolving regulations that govern the use of AI and data in healthcare settings (e.g. the recent EU AI Act). 5. 🔃 Integration with Existing Systems: The technical challenge of integrating new AI technologies with existing healthcare infrastructures. There’s a lot to take in regarding the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)’s final rule for health IT certification. Not only does the final rule – HTI-1, or Health Data, Technology, and Interoperability: Certification Program Updates, Algorithm Transparency and Information – include measures to advance interoperability, it is designed to improve transparency and establishes timelines for the adoption of new baseline standards. Further, as Fierce Healthcare reports, the final rule “establishes first-of-its-kind nationwide requirements for transparency around AI and algorithms used in health IT.” HTI-1 also implements key provisions of the 21st Century Cures Act, with a focus on health IT certification and information blocking. For Europe to stay competitive in AI and Data we must match the development of regulation and guardrails with investments in research and development. Almost every project that we fund at @IHI makes use of artificial intelligence and advanced analytics and over the years we have supported the development of many large, important datasets - from deep phenotyped cohorts, via mobile devices to Real World Data. A key question for Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) - and for many other funding organisations - is how these datasets can be used to drive European innovation into safe, unbiased AI tools that makes a difference to patients and healthcare systems. Next week Wednesday 17.1, I'm privileged to present my perspectives on health data and AI during the forthcoming inauguration of the Belgian Health Data Agency (HDA). The discussion will delve into crucial legislative frameworks such as the AI Act, Data Governance Act, Data Act, and the European Health Data Space. The objective is to provide clarity, mitigate additional burdens, and prevent redundancy. These acts collectively strive to establish an institutional framework for the seamless exchange of health data across Europe. Recognizing the significance of national health data agencies, they play a pivotal role in shaping a unified European Health Data Space. I will be speaking together with the Belgian minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke, Prof. Dr. Sofie De Broe, managing director of the HDA and Andre Dekker who has been focusing on FAIR data sharing infrastructures. The topic of my presentation "Navigating the Shifting Landscape: Regenerative Health Data & AI Ecosystems in the Era of Digitalization". I will emphasize the importance of uninhibited information flow and the cultivation of open innovation ecosystems.
