Celebrating Canada Day: 19 Years of Warmth and Welcome 🍁 Hey everyone! As Canada Day approaches, I can't help but think about my incredible journey. It's been 19 years since I first stepped foot in this amazing country, armed with just three months of English lessons and a heart full of hope. Picture this: A wide-eyed Vietnamese teenager landing in Thunder Bay. Talk about a culture shock! 😅 My first day of high school was hilarious. I showed up dressed like I was going to a job interview - tucked-in shirt, dress pants, the works. A classmate actually asked if I was a new teacher! But here's the thing that blew me away - instead of laughing at me, people were so kind and welcoming. A guy named Steve came up to me with a big smile and we became fast friends. He taught me all about Dance Dance Revolution and even introduced me to the Big Mac challenge. (Five patties? Challenge accepted!) In class, my classmates and teachers were incredibly patient with my broken English. They saw potential in me, not barriers. When I joined a math competition in grade 12, my teammates Peter and Kyle cheered me on like we'd known each other forever. Those two were seriously smart cookies - I was lucky to have such brilliant friends! We even won first place in Northwest Ontario! When it was time for me to leave Thunder Bay for university in Ottawa, my friends did something that still warms my heart to this day. They made me a special yearbook filled with heartfelt letters and pictures of Thunder Bay. It was their way of making sure I'd always remember my time there. I've attached a photo of it to this post - it's one of my most treasured possessions. Now, as I'm about to hit my 20-year mark in Canada, I'm filled with gratitude. Being Canadian isn't just about loving hockey or drowning my pancakes in maple syrup (though I do both!). It's about embracing the values of equality, diversity, and community that I've experienced firsthand. From that nervous newcomer to the grateful almost-20-year resident I am today, I've been shaped by countless acts of Canadian kindness. As we celebrate Canada Day, I'm not just cheering for the country's birthday - I'm celebrating this incredible journey of belonging that Canada offers to all who come here. So, to all my fellow Canadians, whether you've been here for generations or just arrived - Happy Canada Day! Let's keep spreading that unique Canadian warmth. Here's a story that illustrates this perfectly: From 2014 to 2020, I had an employee at Futurify who turned down a job offer with more money. Why? Because he valued something even more: • Mentorship from experienced leaders (that's me and my co-founder!) • A culture fostering continuous growth • Challenging projects with great clients • Daily opportunities to expand his skillset But what made this relationship truly special was our personal connection. We played chess together during lunch breaks and I taught him mindfulness meditation. These moments of connection and learning went beyond just work tasks. As leaders, our role isn't just to manage, but to nurture talent and create spaces where people are excited to come to work every day. Sometimes, that means taking the time to play a game of chess or share a meditation technique. Attending Collision was a whirlwind of excitement and learning! Over three days, I connected with people from all over the world and absorbed insights that left me both inspired and thoughtful. One highlight was Geoffrey Hinton’s keynote, where he warned that AI could be super dangerous but also highlighted its immense benefits, like improving rare disease diagnoses by 20%, potentially saving around 50,000 lives annually. This underscores the crucial need for AI companies to prioritize safety and ethical considerations. Despite the buzz, enterprises are still navigating the ROI from integrating Large Language Models. A recent study showed AI yields strong returns for qualitative projects like chatbots, but quantitative projects often face complexity and delays. Concerns about AI taking over jobs are prevalent, with the CEO of Sourcegraph noting that easily automated jobs will be lost. Interestingly, only 1.5% of GitHub users currently use Copilot, putting early adopters ahead of the curve. At Futurify, our motto is "Redefine Your Future." Joining us is just the beginning of a long journey of learning and self-reinvention. We offer opportunities to engage with cutting-edge technology and apply it to real customer problems. We also use AI to analyze and identify skill gaps to help our developers prioritize their learning. Ultimately, it’s the individual's willpower to grow that makes the difference. In the AI-driven future, human connection, creativity, and emotional intelligence will be crucial. Developers must evolve beyond coding to manage projects and solve customer problems, leaving the coding to AI. Lastly, it was fantastic to see Vietnamese founders Trang Hanh Tran, Hung Q. Nguyen, PfMP, PMP, MinhMai Phan, Hai An Bui at the conference, from Vietnam, Calgary, and Australia. While there wasn't a booth for the Vietnamese tech community this year, I hope to see a prominent Vietnamese presence in the future. Unlocking Innovation: Day 1 Highlights from Collision Conference! 🚀 Day 1 at #CollisionConference was a whirlwind of inspiration and innovation! Here’s a quick recap of the highlights: 🎤 AI Agents Revolution: Kicked off with a session by the CEO of Imbue, who spoke passionately about harnessing AI agents to handle tasks autonomously, freeing us from micromanagement. Followed by the CEO of Rabbit, discussing large action models solving everyday problems. 💳 Fintech for All: Next, I dove into fintech with the CTO of Tala, who highlighted the $10 trillion market opportunity in financial inclusion for underserved populations—a topic close to my heart from my time working with Experian Singapore on a financial inclusion education app. Alternative credit scoring can be a game-changer in places like Vietnam. 💡 Product-Led Growth: Attended a masterclass with the VP of Product from Amplitude and CPO of EY. They stressed the importance of letting users experience your product without sales intermediaries. Experimentation is key, even if 80% of trials fail—they lead to invaluable insights. 🔍 Reliable AI: A deep dive with Intuit’s chief scientist on building dependable AI was illuminating. Their research on reducing AI hallucinations offered practical applications for our own AI projects at Futurify. 🤝 Networking Galore: Wrapped up the day connecting with amazing startup founders. A highlight was meeting the founder of WorkSimply. Through him, I was introduced to the cofounder and CPO of CVPartner from Norway, whose $6M ARR business is impressive. We had a great conversation about using AI to build developer CVs from their tasks and code. Exhausting, but so worth it.
