Why do I care about the Purpose + Profit thing? I honestly think it holds the key to solving some of our biggest challenges and creating the change that is so needed. At its worse, traditional capitalism serves to maximise profits which fuel the perpetual growth of exploitative practices. Traditional philanthropy on the other hand is benevolent but inefficient, characterised by grant funding or donations to non-profits that are forever dependent upon external funding to achieve positive impact. Whereas, a purpose-led, financially sustainable organisation can generate impact alongside a financial return, which is used to further its mission. This allows for positive impact to be scaled exponentially. And the ability to also generate a profit (as a consequence, not an overriding objective) means that financial returns can be shared with founders, staff and funders. The More Things Keep Changing A few days ago, I had written on how investing in the right talent is key to delivering impact on ground for Not-for Profit organisations. The issue of core funding or providing for overheads is an area that funders feel should have a minimal cost. Which is counterintuitive because if a large sum is to be spent on delivering impact, the people driving this need to be suitably skilled to do so. And yet, one point that is emphasised by several donors (to be fair, not by all) is the ceiling on the percent of the Grant that can be used for overheads. Somewhere there is a power equation - that of the giver and the receiver. The Receiver is trying to create a more equitable world in whatever way they can. And the moneys they receive is to allow them to do so. But a large part of the conversation on how this is to be done is driven by the Giver. This morning, I came across a TED talk that Dan Palotta delivered almost a decade ago. (Dan Pallotta  is an American entrepreneur, author, and humanitarian activist. He has written several books on philanthropy and its nuances and how charities need to stand up for themselves). Since then, the world has changed. Social impact, social investment, venture philanthropy are words we keep hearing again and again.
