I always found Donahoe to be pretty kind and pragmatic in my time at Nike (which was very short). Nike, like many companies, struggle understanding what is going on and why. There’s way too much gut feel still used today so then you go and try to get the best gut out there, John being one of those. Until you let data - without prejudice - to contextualize and guide your gut, this cycle will happen. It sucks for employees and I don’t think anyone likes cutting people. Try to think about this as it relates to the AI wave. Are your trying to gain productivity to eliminate humans or are you trying to gain productivity to allow humans to add more to your organization? Yes, it is good for employees because they don’t lose jobs and should make more money by adding value. But it is also good for organizations to keep better guts to guide the next wave of AI enable automation. Costs more to acquire employees and train them up than keeping employees and allowing them to figure it out. Balancing people and profit is not a choice, it’s a competitive advantage. Why not err on the side of people? It’s amazing what they can do, like invent Artificial Intelligence.

After being a leader in digital innovation for years Nike, with from Nike+ to the latest .SWOOSH web3 platform has decided to make some big job and budget cuts in this sector. It was often reported that the growth at Nike was driven by these innovations and was portrayed as the benchmark case study on integrating these digital experiences into a brand. As well as major acquisitions such as RTFKT. "The $2 billion savings plan will focus on core product innovation and shift energy away from less essential experimentation." So while in the medium term, the technical innovations will most likely prove correct the focus has now moved back to the technical innovations in its core products such as running shoes. From HUGO BOSS to Harrods to H&M the iconic brands winning with Gen Z today are those that translate their brand collaborations from the real-world into virtual worlds. For example, HUGO is the official apparel and eyewear partner of the Visa Cash App RB F1 Team. Rather than keeping this partnership solely in the real-world, HUGO worked with the F1 team to launch ‘HUGO GARAGE’ as part of their virtual experience on Roblox, PLANET HUGO. This allowed players to explore the Visa Cash App RB Formula 1 car and its special livery for the Miami grand prix. Over the course of the prix weekend, the amount of visits to PLANET HUGO increased by 96k to 896k, a 12% increase in just 3 days. By leveraging digital activations alongside real-world partnerships, brands can expand their reach across platforms and audiences. The enhanced and more active engagement facilitated by these virtual worlds adds a new dimension to consumer experiences and drives loyalty.

Nike is another company that has had an implementation horror story and dealt with one of the biggest implementation failures ever! 👻 The failure resulted in $100 million in lost sales, their stock price went down 20% and they had to deal with a plethora of lawsuits! 😱 To avoid this disaster, Nike should've had better planning and reduced the complexity of their project by avoiding so many customizations.
