Ubuntu 23.10 a.k.a Mantic Minotaur: A Journey Down Memory Lane The digital tapestry of our lives is embroidered with the many choices we make, some small, some monumental. The release of Ubuntu 23.10, affectionately named "Mantic Minotaur," carries me back to such a pivotal moment in my life, sparking a sense of profound nostalgia. Fifteen years ago, on a whim spurred by an innocuous conversation about the absence of a 'refresh' button in Linux, I found myself delving into the world of Ubuntu. I recall the excitement, and the trepidation, as I ordered that Ubuntu 8.04 CD from eBay for a mere 80 Rupees. In an act of youthful audacity, I wiped my entire hard drive and took a leap of faith into the world of Linux. I was quickly introduced to the challenges of a new operating system. No sound, missing essential software, and a lack of home internet turned my venture into a mini-adventure. Carrying my system unit to a nearby cybercafe, I invested five hours and 100 rupees ensuring that everything was up and running. The Terminal became my new playground. A simple command, such as creating a folder, gave me the exhilarating thrill akin to being a movie hacker. It was more than just an OS; it was a journey, an experience, an education. The years have seen me transition to a Mac, but the essence of Ubuntu never really left. When I code, it's with an Ubuntu laptop by my side. The familiar prompt in Mac's terminal is a constant reminder of my Ubuntu days. The distro not only taught me about software but inspired me to innovate. My college, to this day, runs on a custom OS I designed based on Ubuntu in 2013. Today, we live in an era where Ubuntu often surpasses Windows in terms of immediate hardware compatibility. No fuss, no additional drivers; it's sheer plug-and-play magic. It's heartening to see the strides Ubuntu has made over the years, making it as user-friendly as possible, while still providing ample room for the tinkering enthusiasts among us. As we stand on the brink of yet another technological leap with "Mantic Minotaur," my heart swells with anticipation. The evolution of Ubuntu mirrors the evolution of open-source software, showcasing the wonders that can be achieved when a community comes together. Forking the legacy MPL-licensed Terraform and maintaining the fork in the Linux Foundation under the name OpenTofu is similar to the way Linux is managed by the Linux Foundation under the stewardship of multiple companies. This ensures the tool stays truly open source and neutral and not at the whim of any one company. Now that we are part of the Linux Foundation, we can guarantee that OpenTofu will remain: 1. Truly open source 2. Community-driven 3. Impartial 4. Layered and modular 5. Backwards-compatible Companies will encounter more difficulties with the situation. Switching to a new project carries risks, but staying with a project that changes its license without warning is far riskier. This risk is minimized by giving OpenTofu to the Linux Foundation, and OpenTofu’s aim of maintaining feature parity with Terraform for future releases reduces the technical risks. 🥸🥸🥸

The iron law of corporate open source: If your open source software becomes successful, you will lose control over it. Corollary: if you try to alienate your users in any way (license changes, trademark changes, business model changes), your software (and its community) will get forked. Better to avoid such dramatic changes, or embrace the loss of control and donate it to a foundation like Apache, LF or similar to make it a multi-stakeholder project before the fork happens. As Jose Manrique Lopez de la Fuente usually says: "open source is not a business model"

I really like this turn of events. Hashicorp had decade old issues (like secrets in the state file that weren’t getting attention (even having a vault provider that could be used to lookup the secret would’ve been cool). So I can’t wait for this to get off the ground. I’m sure there will be compatibility issues (probably even added by hashicorp as “features”) but I think the initial switch away from terraform should be smooth and I think module authors should be able to design for both (hopefully not needing a build tool to handle the differences). I don’t think Hashicorp has 18 people developing hashicorp code either, so opentofu should move faster too.

Four years ago, almost to the day, I merged an independent organization (FINOS) in The Linux Foundation. And, while integrations are always hard, I have been able to experience first hand how committed its leaders and the whole organization is to be the best possible steward for the community, first and foremost for its maintainers and the consumers who rely on true #opensource. That is why I decided to take on my role at Linux Foundation Europe to bring decades of experience and this ethos to the European ecosystem. And look, nobody is perfect and I always welcome feedback, but when I hear criticism on the basis of shallow geopolitical arguments or philosophy, I just ask folks to look at the facts (and, yes, I know, facts are overrated in 2024). #OpenTOFU and #Valkey are just the last two examples of taking a firm stance to support grassroots open source communities when vendors decide (fully in their prerogative) to abandon the open source route. Just think about where modern technology would be if Linux hadn't been kept truly independent since its inception...
