Happy birthday, Canonical 🎉 I also remember receiving that CD in the mail (with free shipping), and I am happy to later have had the privilege to work for 5+ years for Canonical and contribute to #ubuntu. I thank my great teammates in the SDK team Zoltan Balogh Zsombor Egri Liv Dywan Benjamin Zeller 💻 Timo Jyrinki Florian Boucault Loïc Molinari Gerry Boland JP as well as all the other people (like the Design, Apps and Community teams) I've worked with in Canonical for our many great moments together.

Happy 20th birthday to the UK's Canonical My accidental entry to the world of open source began in February 2008 when I joined 4 year old Canonical as its first General Counsel. I spent 5 years leading its global legal function. I learned about open source from the Ubuntu developers employed at Canonical many of whom came from Debian and from the ubuntu community. The values and beliefs matched my own. People like Matt Zimmerman and Jono Bacon were tasked by Mark Shuttleworth with teaching me open source. I am eternally grateful. I love Steven Vaughan-Nichols' piece today celebrating Canonical's 20th birthday - although he doesn't dwell as much on our work with Dell Technologies in bringing a linux operating system to the desktop as I might have - he rightly recognises the shift in Canonical and the ubuntu operating system to the cloud, IOT and mobile markets where it has been a market leader and continues to have huge influence. People like Simon Wardley who was the Director of Cloud back in the day and others like Matt Barker Cristian Parrino and Martin Stadler worked on this with me. I am delighted to say many of them work with me in building our UK representation of open technology through OpenUK today. If you take a look at the people making OpenUK tick - from Lou Peers MAPM to Steven Bianchi, Damian O., Matt Jarvis, Laura Czajkowski, Jonathan Davies, Allison Randal, Peter Goodall, and many more, you will realise that we are part of a cohort of people in open source software who worked on the ground-breaking technology that Canonical developed all those years ago - from Landscape to juju. Even today much of that technology remains state of the art. As SJVN says in the article,"Canonical's influence extends beyond the desktop".... it also extends to the UK's leadership in open source software. As number one in Europe in terms of developers and contribution, Mark and Canonical must take some credit for contributing to the place we hold and to this success which has played no small part in our building OpenUK as a geographically focused open tech community, policy and learning organisation. Thank you for this. I wish every success to the Canonical team in the year ahead. We look forward to celebrating your 21st next year. #opensource #opensourcesoftware #canonical #ubuntu #openuk https://lnkd.in/eJb8Yuat
