ESA is laying the groundwork for the development of satellite technology designed to harvest the Sun's energy in space before transmitting it wirelessly to receiving stations on Earth. The initiative, named SOLARIS, raises the tantalising prospect of clean, scalable energy beamed down continuously from orbit to back up weather-dependent renewables and eliminate reliance on fossil fuels. Through SOLARIS, ESA is bringing together policymakers, energy suppliers and space companies to investigate the feasibility of developing and implementing space-based solar power. This is intended to enable Europe to make an informed decision by the end of 2025 on proceeding with a development programme dedicated to the technology. “The difference with space-based solar power is that the amount of energy transmitted and successfully collected would need to be far larger to make the venture viable – this presents many technological hurdles to be overcome.” A further SOLARIS study – led by consultancy Arthur D Little in collaboration with energy supplier ENGIE – is investigating a secondary concept that could serve as a forerunner to radio-frequency solar power satellites. This type of system uses large mirrors deployed in space to reflect sunlight down through the atmosphere to existing terrestrial solar farms, boosting their yields and enabling them to continue producing energy even at times when natural light levels are low. In this month's Electronic Specifier Ltd magazine, Peter Lo, Head of Onshore Renewables and Storage at ITPEnergised looks at the latent potential of EVs and the role that they could play in scaled-up virtual EV power plants in the future to provide much needed balancing of the grid in urban areas with the increasing volumes of intermittent renewables coming online. High volumes of intermittent renewables will drive substantial swing capacities when the wind blows/ does not blow and when the sun shines/ does not shine and can vastly impact grid balancing, power quality and stability. #EVs #netzero #grid #renewables

Air Liquide is proud to participate in the HYGUANE project, supported by European Space Agency - ESA, CNES and ADEME in French Guiana. The goal of this project is to #decarbonize the industrial activities of the Guiana Space Center (CSG) as well as mobility in French Guiana thanks in part to #renewable and #lowcarbon #hydrogen. With the HYGUANE project, hydrogen will be produced by a 1.25 MW electrolyzer, powered by renewable electricity from a #photovoltaic field on the CSG site. This PEM electrolyzer will be operated by Air Liquide. With over 60 years of experience across the entire hydrogen value chain, Air Liquide is a world leader in this molecule, which is set to play a key role in #energytransition.

Europe falling behind in the race to develop #spaceBased #solar power? “In a time when we’re looking into so many other possibilities, the world is missing out by not looking at space-based solar power,” says Sanjay Vijendran, lead of the ESA’s #SOLARIS project, which is researching the feasibility of #SBSP. Space-based solar power (#SBSP) could not only support Europe’s growing energy demand, but also provide significant business opportunities to energy sector players who commercialise it first.
