To truly achieve our offshore wind potential in GB we must ensure the tools we use are fit for this future. The OFTO regime is now in excess of 10 years old, and was designed for a nascent sector. We are now well beyond that, and I share my thoughts in this piece about the key challenges of the current OFTO regime and how to overcome them. Two key changes are proposed: allowing generators to retain ownership of new assets and reclaim legacy ones after the OFTO revenue term; and revising the regime to ensure third-party owner-operators are financially robust and generators are compensated for delays.

As we take part in #RUKGOW24 this week, it’s a timely reminder of the crucial role offshore wind plays in the UK’s energy mix. Long seen as a cornerstone of the country’s renewable energy sector, RWE has always been proud to be at the forefront of the transformation. But in an increasingly complex and costly regulatory environment, it’s important we don’t lose sight of previously shared government and industry goals of innovation and cost minimisation. We're thrilled to share that we've strengthened ties with TotalEnergies under a Master Services Agreement to drive forward the global energy transition. TotalEnergies and RWE have inaugurated a five-turbine wind farm in the Aisne region of France, with an annual production of 38 GWh. The Vilpion wind farm is now fully operational following the commissioning of the first machines in September 2023. The project represents a successful collaboration between TotalEnergies, RWE, local elected representatives, and all key stakeholders, reflecting their shared commitment to developing more green electricity generation projects in the region. FRANCE AWARDS FIRST COMMERCIAL FLOATING WIND FARM PROJECT A consortium between Elicio and BayWa r.e. Global has won a tender to build France's first large-scale commercial floating offshore wind farm. The 230-270 MW Pennavel project off the coast of Lorient, Brittany is expected to generate around 30% of the region's current renewable electricity supply, and will power over 450,000 homes annually once operational. Pennavel will be France’s first large-scale commercial floating offshore wind project and is claimed to be the first commercial floating wind farm to be awarded a long-term Contract for Difference (CfD). The project secured a grid connection from French transmission operator RTE.
