🌍 Exciting News for Africa's Clean Cooking Sector! 🌍 The recent Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa has ushered in a transformative era for the continent, mobilizing an unprecedented USD 2.2 billion in financial commitments from governments, private sector, and international institutions. This milestone is a game-changer for over 1 billion people who currently lack access to clean cooking solutions. With this funding, we are set to significantly improve health outcomes by reducing harmful emissions from traditional biomass fuels, which predominantly affect women and children. Moreover, the economic empowerment of women, who will no longer spend hours foraging for fuel, will open up new opportunities for education and employment. The environmental benefits are equally profound. By transitioning to clean cooking, we will mitigate deforestation and decrease greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a healthier planet. This landmark investment will stimulate local innovation, create jobs, and drive economic growth across Africa. The Summit has also emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, with over 100 countries and organizations pledging to prioritize clean cooking. Nearly one in three people, the vast majority in the world's poorest regions, still lack access to clean cooking facilities, with significant ramifications for public health, local environments and #socioeconomic development. Inhaling hazardous smoke from traditional stoves and open fires causes millions of premature deaths annually, disproportionately affecting women and children. The arduous task of collecting firewood also hinders educational and #employmentopportunities and strains natural resources – compounding costs for vulnerable #populations. The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the African Development Bank Group have joined forces to address this critical issue in a special report, A Vision for Clean Cooking Access for All. While covering #globaltrends, the report pays special attention to the needs in #africa , where they are most pressing. It sheds light on the current state of clean cooking, the costs of inaction, and the benefits of boosting access in line with United Nations #SustainableDevelopment Goal 7. Countries like China, India and Indonesia have made commendable strides in disseminating clean cooking technologies. Yet, in sub-Saharan Africa, there is a rising number of people without access to cleaner stoves and fuels, mainly because population growth is outpacing gains. This could hinder broader development efforts, making it imperative to elevate clean cooking as a policy priority. The report presents country-by-country assessments and an outlook for clean cooking under existing policies, offering a roadmap towards universal access. World Leaders Secure $2.2 Billion to Tackle Africa’s Dirty Cooking Crisis Health & Environment 15/05/2024 In a ground-breaking move, global leaders on Tuesday made an unprecedented financial pledge to tackle the dirty cooking fuels crisis, which silently claims millions of lives across Africa. The Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa, chaired jointly by the leaders of Tanzania and Norway, alongside the African Development Bank, secured financial commitments from governments, development institutions and companies. The summit was co-hosted in Paris by the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). This was the largest amount of money to be pledged to clean cooking energy at a single gathering, and earmarked for a continent where four in five people still cook on open fires. As such, the summit was billed as a potential turning point for Africa, and particularly African women who shoulder much of the health burden from cookstove pollution.

'Urgent action on clean cooking is no less than a life-and-death matter for millions on women, especially in Africa, where the number of people relying on polluting cooking fuels and stoves continues to rise. That’s why our organisations are working together, and with other leaders across Africa and beyond, to address this crisis. On 14 May, the IEA and the African Development Bank will host a high-level Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa, supported by the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA), to dramatically accelerate commitments on finance, policy, and collaboration efforts to tackle the troubling lack of clean cooking deployment. Co-chaired by the President of Tanzania and the Prime Minister of Norway, the Summit will work towards three priority outcomes: Increasing commitments to clean cooking from public and private funders with the aim of reaching USD 4 billion of mobilised capital investments annually from now to 2030. Cementing clean cooking as a global priority that leads to the development of ambitious strategies with enabling policy environments. Supporting multi-stakeholder partnerships on clean cooking access at the country level and removing barriers to the growth of clean cooking across the continent.'

Today at #COP28 the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) and ICLEI Africa released a new report that explores the crucial role clean cooking plays in the future of Africa’s #sustainable cities. As African cities grow, so does the demand for charcoal, which many urban households rely on for their energy and cooking needs. However, burning such fuels in inefficient stoves can harm citizens' health and contribute to #ClimateChange and environmental degradation.
