CEO of Citrus America, Inc., Member at Rolling Stone Culture Council, Juicing Entrepreneur, Fan of Healthy Eating and Craft Cocktails
The lines between restaurants, c-stores and grocery stores is blurring. What are you doing to compete for shopping trips or more restaurant visits? Are you investing in fresh products? Gourmet options? Amazing tastes? Are you competing on costs? How does convenience play a role? What are you doing to stay relevant? Interesting read below. Congrats to Catherine Douglas M. on capturing a major industry issue. Citrus America, Inc. just presented strategies to compete for trips at the StorePoint Fresh Event.
Restaurant traffic is down and shoppers are more willing than ever to grab a fresh meal at their local grocer. Grocers have been turning up the heat on their foodservice offerings in response. And they're honing in on pricing, with lots of BOGO deals, combos and bundled offers. Giant Food, for example, has a $10 meal deal at its stores. It's also dedicating more space and cases to meal options in its new locations. While there’s some internal competition with the center aisles, Cynthia Volk, the retailer’s director of deli, bakery and foodservice, said she focuses more on external competitors. “I’m competing with restaurants. Now, when it comes to the assortment that we have it’s either come here and grab an offering or maybe go to Chipotle,” Volk said. Story by Catherine Douglas M.

The effect of restaurant menu increases? Your competition is increasingly the prepared foods departments at the supermarket. While menu increases may be necessary and accurately reflect increased ingredient & labor costs, consumers may be changing their spending patterns. The line between foodservice & retail gets blurrier as retailers invest in creating better prepared foods with even more options. #foodservice #foodserviceindustry https://lnkd.in/g6vWxgkn

As someone who has worked in the C-store marketplace for nearly 8 years, I have watched this come into focus throughout most of the industry. When a C-store provides quality ingredients, a purposeful attitude to the customer experience, and quality staff will be the key to success. Having fresh and exciting new options will keep people coming in the door to see what's next. I have watched the options evolve from chicken to pizza to tacos and the list goes on but, without a clear attack plan and execution it will not make a difference. In order to break the perception associated with C-store offerings, the industry truly needs to glean research and resources for the restaurant industry. The investment will be huge and has the potential to boost the bottom line in a huge way. Who doesn't want to be able to stop for fuel, use a clean facility, and have a quick, quality, and freshly prepared meal on a long road trip? Who wouldn't want to have a local C-store providing the same services in their own neighborhood? If C-stores are able to establish brand loyalty and become trusted for providing this type of environment they will see growth. What is your favorite QSR type restaurant that a C-store is currently operating?

After more than two decades, the success of c-store foodservice still comes down largely to quality - or more accurately, its perception compared to other up-market channels. Gen Z, however, was not alive for the incremental upscaling and are accustomed to food everywhere, all-the-time. #c-stores #foodserviceip #cstorenews

Grocery Foodservice/HMR. Ready Made Meals and meal solutions are in high demand and this trend will continue. It’s all about good food, comfort classics, convenience, and affordability. The struggle for retailers is the labour required to properly execute programs, finding and keeping dedicated staff, and control inventory to minimize shrink. Build it and they will come. Manage it and they will keep coming. This is my passion.
