Happy Earth Day with PLG!🌱 Last week, in the honour of Earth Day (April 22nd) our PLGSA Team organized a Zero Plastic Week Challenge to encourage everyone to reduce their reliance on plastic and adopt sustainable alternatives. As a result, I was fortunate enough to win one of three 100€ cash donations that we would donate to an environmental charity of my choice. I am incredibly grateful to the entire organizing team, and the PLGSA team for this impactful initiative, and also extend my congratulations to the other winners!💚 I learned a lot from the zero plastic challenge, and here are some of my key takeaways: 1. Bring reusable water bottles instead of buying packaged plastic bottles. 2. Carry cloth bags while shopping to avoid plastic bags. 3. Use alternatives to plastic packaging. 4. Recycle plastics we already have instead of throwing them away. (Reuse. Recycle. Reduce) We have only one Earth, and every small action we take can create a ripple effect for a greener tomorrow. Last year, in a thrilling collaboration with Challenge Works, USAID, and the Government of Canada, Proportion - Human Centered Design agency we designed and curated the Mombasa Plastics Prize. Our mission? Rallying the brilliant minds of Mombasa's youth to brainstorm ways to outsmart plastic waste in our neighborhoods. Fast-forward, and we found ourselves in awe of 60 innovators across 15 teams, all with a shared dream: a cleaner Mombasa. Their dedication wasn't just about the $70,000 prize; it was about making waves of change! The spotlight was on our top three teams. But hold your applause; that was just the beginning. Guess what's brewing? Phase Two: The MPP Incubator! We're on a mission to ensure these genius ideas bloom into full-fledged, world-changing businesses. Think of it as a growth spurt, powered by mentoring, training, and all the support they need. Imagine a Mombasa where these businesses lead the charge against marine plastic pollution. Exciting, right? Beyond this, a template for creating new enterprises from scratch has been created and tested. Cleaning the beaches and dunes from litter is a useful way to spend and celebrate International Volunteering Day on December 5th. In collaboration with Plastic Whale, colleagues from Orbia Building & Infrastructure (Wavin) dedicated their time to collecting plastic, bottles, cans, rope, and more. The majority of the items we gathered are destined for recycling. Also within our own industry, Wavin has ambitious plans to collect used plastic pipes and fittings, aiming for extensive recycling. For example, the Wavin TakeBack Service is already active in multiple countries, collecting used materials from building sites. Our objective is to achieve a global usage of circular (recycled, biobased) material amounting to 70kton by 2025. A heartfelt thanks to all the Wavin volunteers, and a special acknowledgment to PlasticWhale for their continuous efforts in combating land and sea waste. Bye Bye Plastic Bags: Youth leading the fight against plastic waste 🌍🛑 Bye Bye Plastic Bags is a youth-driven NGO that says NO to single-use plastic bags. The movement was founded by two young sisters, Meliati and Isabelle Wijensen. In 2013, aged just 10 and 12, the Wijensen sisters began their mission to reduce the use of plastic bags on their home island. Their goal is to completely rid Bali of plastic bags. Their initiative quickly gained popularity, attracting the attention of both locals and the international community. Actions and achievements "Bye Bye Plastic Bags" has organized a number of important actions, including beach clean-ups, educational campaigns, and working meetings with local and national authorities. A key moment was a petition that gathered thousands of signatures and was sent to the Bali government. As a result of their efforts, Bali banned the use of plastic bags, cups, and straws in 2018. Global impact This movement has grown beyond Bali and now has teams and support around the world. They host workshops, training seminars, and other events to inspire young people around the world to fight plastic waste. Values of "Bye Bye Plastic Bags": - Education - Innovation - Collaboration - Passion - Sustainability - Grit - Leadership The "Bye Bye Plastic Bags" Movement - is a shining example of how young people can make a difference in their communities and even the world. A new milestone has been unlocked by Plastic Bank Brazil! 🤝 Plastic Bank members in Brazil have reached a milestone of collecting over 4.5 million kilograms of plastic. The biggest contribution coming from our community in Espirito Santo, growing from collecting  46,976 kilograms of plastic waste in February 2023 to 76,443 kilograms in May 2023! Our impact on the ground doesn’t stop there. Through our Community Development Programs in the country, we have distributed hygiene and vegetable kits to 235 collection members in Espirito Santo and food baskets to 52 collection members in Rio de Janeiro. A great example of corporate social responsibility in practice! ⤵ 🎬 15.6 million plastic bags were used in the export banana sector in Peru last year. With the project 'From bunch bags to corner boards - recycling banana plastic,' AgroFair Europe and its partners are meeting the challenge of ensuring the bags are recycled responsibly. Their end-goal? HASHTAGS AND HYPERBOLE 'Hashtag-Plastic Free July' is here again, and for yet another year we will see groups around us lament plastic waste, without seeing the value of actually tackling what is literally in their own backyards. Recycling is a very important part of mitigating plastic pollution whilst we attempt to legislate reductions in its use, and/or invent alternatives - but both these latter exercises cost a LOT of money, $100s on the $1, compared to the pennies on the $1 recycling costs communities. In the last few years that our little 501c3 non-profit Plastic Beach has been in business we have helped now-30 #SanDiego area business and residents (!) tackle their soft plastic packaging - with 35 tons collected and recycled to our downcycling partner Trex Company That's 35 tons of soft plastic that never made it to a SoCal #landfill, a SoCal waterway, or the Pacific - let alone the worlds' ecosystems and then us - which is usually what most of us care about most! So this #plasticfreejuly let's take a pragmatic look at the plastic-ridden world we have created and decide to engage it on 2(!) fronts - recycle AND legislate/replace. This year, #WorldEnvironmentDay will be hosted by Côte d’Ivoire with a focus to #beatplasticpollution. #Plasticpollution in our ocean is threatening marine species and ecosystems, impacting human activities and human health, and costing billions of dollars each year. The annual discharge of plastic into the ocean is estimated to be 11 million tons.   In 2021, IRP released the think piece “Policy Options to Eliminate Additional Marine Plastic Litter by 2050 under the G20 Osaka Blue Ocean Vision”, in partnership with the Japan - The Government of Japan, Systemiq Ltd. and The Pew Charitable Trusts. It shows the marine plastic litter trends relevant to 2050, summarizes the current plastic policy landscape and explores policy interventions to achieve the Osaka Blue Ocean Vision.
