I've made a lot of really hard decisions in my life. Asking Eric Ritchie to run Sargent as its president is NOT one of them. It's a BIG decision, but it wasn't hard.   In 1991, in the aftermath of the sale of HE Sargent (the family business for 60+ years), I agonized on whether I should stay or go.  On Thanksgiving weekend that year, I decided to go.   A few months later, Sargent & Sargent started with a little puff. Kind of a "little train that could".   Another tough decision came in 2004-5, when Sargent & Sargent bought HE Sargent, and combined the two companies into what is now Sargent.   Another BIG (if not really that tough) decision came in 2013 when Sargent became employee-owned. Separating ownership succession from management succession was important to me, and the benefit that accrued to our employees since then has been tremendous.   Yet another big decision came in 2020 when the venerable Timothy Folster retired: we asked a two-year employee to take the VP Ops/COO role -- Eric Ritchie.   Eric was quick to earn credibility in his new role, as well as confidence from the crew, our board, our financial partners, and our customers.   I believe successful transitions at all levels should be managed like a relay race: make the transition while both people are running at full speed.   Because of the values Eric holds important; because of the leadership he's shown; because of the confidence he's EARNED, I've asked Eric to take the president role, and he was voted president-elect yesterday by our board of directors. At our May 9 Annual Meeting, Eric will be formally voted in as president.   One of the BIGGEST -- but also easiest -- decisions I've ever made.   What this means is Eric will be President and COO while I remain CEO. In practical terms, that means Eric will run the business on a day-to-day basis, and I will focus on strategy, vision, and leadership development.   Congratulations, Eric. We grow up, sometimes finding love's of our life. Some create a family. Some find passion or drive with their skills. Some realize you have to work to survive. I'm blessed to be in great company at Rea & Associates, Inc. with hard working colleagues who embody many of the core values I hold. Last Friday, we held our semi-annual Segment day in the Wooster Rea office. The Rea Information Services team discussed change, growth, restructuring, and where we're headed. As part of the leadership team, I love looking out to the team I support and the clients we serve. It's a pretty great feeling knowing we fight the same fight. Regardless of being an entrepreneur, employee, or student - you will have to work. And work hard at that. You can't get away from it. Stop running from working hard - you won't earn much. With the New Year fast approaching, it's time to review this year's results and consider plans for the upcoming year (don't we all have a love/hate relationship with those New Year resolutions?). This time, I'd love to share a few books I read this year that not only captivated me but also provoked considerable reflection long after I finished reading them. A special thanks to Luke van der Waals for his inspiring post shared a few days back. 1. "The Second World War" by Winston Churchill is a substantial book (spanning 6 volumes), yet it's truly worth the time invested! Amidst the plethora of historical facts and figures, the narrative is skillfully interwoven, making it engaging and dynamic. Beyond the historical retelling, it offers a compelling portrayal of exceptional leadership by Churchill—his ability to think innovatively. Leading the country during one of modern history's most challenging times, Churchill inspired the nation to stand against fascism. Despite facing formidable opposition domestically, he adeptly negotiated and collaborated with other leaders, engaging various countries. Ultimately, his early coalition-building played a pivotal role in securing victory. Key leadership skills highlighted: a clear vision and mission, the knack for appointing the right people to the right roles, adeptness in collaborating with diverse powers while knowing when to compromise, and a profound understanding of both self and team strengths and weaknesses. 2. "Leadership and Self-Deception" by the Arbinger Institute adopts a narrative format, making it an easier read. Central to its premise is the notion of Blame: often, we tend to fault others for our problems—circumstances, environment, or those around us—rather than introspectively examining what we can change within ourselves. This book prompts reflection on how we approach our careers and personal lives. 3. "No Room for Small Dreams" by Shimon Peres, the eighth Prime Minister of Israel, narrates Israel's journey as a nation—from a desert-like place to one of the world's most developed economies. It illustrates instances of exemplary leadership displayed by various individuals in the country's brief history. My key takeaways: know your mission and dream big, inspiring those around you because big dreams require a team, thinking innovatively, and building a strong team. Happy reading!
