On December 2nd there will be an eco-socialism conference in #london (and online). Everyone is welcome to attend (and feel free to share this with as many people that you think might be interested, on and off LinkedIn). We have a tiered pricing-structure for tickets and there is the option to select a free ticket(s) for those that need it. We will be discussing how to create an eco-socialist movement that is rooted in the trade unions, the communities, our schools, colleges and universities, in social movements and our workplaces. It must tackle the big issues; socialising private wealth, housing and land, ending the market economy, dismantling imperialism, fighting for the abolition of borders, militarism and policing and for a social transformation of the economy from the ground up. Even if you do not consider yourself to be an eco-socialist - all are welcome (as we all have different takes on the world and we are not here to impose a single vision/identity on anyone.) :) We will have three panels on the day: 1. Simon Pirani and Clara Paillard will be discussing the destructive nature of capitalism, and why it is incompatible with life on earth (not just for ecological reasons, but for social justice reasons as well). 2. Matt Huber and Elke Pirgmaier will be debating whether #degrowth is necessary and the best option for us to take (Matt will be joining us remotely on Zoom). 3. Max Ajl, Alia Amirali and Climate Vanguard will be discussing how to develop an eco-socialist strategy based on their own experiences in activism and mobilisation. 🌱 In our past event, where we talked about the wicked challenges of Denmark, we have identified the "biodiversity-agriculture-climate nexus" is one of the pressing challenges we face. In this context, we have been trying to find resources and reports to help us understand more about this issue. My TEDX talk is live! It's called "Sustainability Surge: Channeling Anxiety Into Aligned Action in Climate's New Vanguard," and it's about the new climate movement and all the inspiration and hope I've gotten from being part of it the last couple of years. The event was TEDx Lacamas Lake: Countdown, in November, 2023. TEDx countdown events are all about climate and sustainability, and the whole day was full of exciting and inspiring talks and performances, from topics on biochar and electric school buses to personal sustainability, green cement, and sustainable agriculture. Putting my talk together was a huge labor of love. I only had about 3 weeks to write, edit, memorize, and practice delivery. (so glad I roped some friends into watching a run-through!) It was my first time giving a talk of this sort (I've run classes, workshops, and retreats), but I knew it was an incredible opportunity that I wanted to make the most of in spreading the word about this movement. Huge shout out to Katherine Radeka for organizing the event, and many thanks to those who provided support and/or attended, especially Lori Eberly, LCSW, Ari Simmons, Ania Korsunska, Spenser Meeks, Carly Thomasset, Carson D. The stories that define our thinking today result in degeneration... It is time to image other stories that help us rethink and result in regeneration. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to delve into the realm of regenerative thinking and development. It is a privilege to not only unearth these concepts but also to articulate them in a way that resonates with others. Walking alongside insightful minds like Leen Gorissen and engaging with a diverse network of individuals, I am reminded of Tyson Yunkaporta's wisdom: "Solutions to complex problems take many dissimilar minds and points of view to design, so we have to do that together, linking up with as many other us-twos as we can to form networks of dynamic interaction." Today I attended the #NetZeroFestival in London, which had a strong agenda focus on Nature Positivity. One of my key takeaways was an observation around the often “tunnel vision” focus on climate change and carbon reduction in sustainability plans, overlooking the critical lens of regeneration, which transforms sustainability from a reductionist to an aspirational agenda in the hearts and minds of decision makers. This in turn triggered my thinking around how to more effectively communicate the interconnected “co-benefits” of sustainability - beyond preventing climate change - including positive human health, social justice and biodiversity. Surfacing tangible datapoints that draw clearer links across this thematic network, and shifting to more holistic sustainability messaging could unlock greater impact with consumers, internal stakeholders, investors and policy makers alike. #sustainability #futurefoodsystems #regeneration

Noted on Caffeine daily, is the Climate Tech Summit Aotearoa on the 20th of June. It is good to see this conference offering free places and there is an unwritten rule that this will invite in the outliers. History tells us the outliers are bound to be disruptive, but history also tells us the way we organise conferences does not welcome disruptors in a tightly held program. I have noted that this forces the disruptors to band together to form alternative groups that further alienates them from the discussion. Thus, losing the opportunity to question assumptions. I have no concrete suggestions to make as to how conferences might be organised in the future, but I do know that the current accepted format is tired and in need of a rethink. Once again without knowing how this will be conducted, I do know what the hallmark of a good conference must be. It must not relegate different thinkers to the classic breakout model where the status quo inevitably prevails. Being human, we rush to early consensus, especially as breakouts are carefully timed. New ideas worth considering can only come from the clash of perspectives and must be curated by those with insight. Our world is suffering from speed thinking when we know in our hearts that too much is overlooked to guarantee long term success for people, planet and dare I say profit.

“Climate resilience”, I realised when attending the ISS Erasmus Community Café: From eco-anxiety to resilience, also includes resisting the aggravating actions of climate change-denying governments. The audience (myself included) had not yet recovered from the blow dealt by the Netherlands’ first radical right government, which presented its coalition agreement that same morning, May 16th. No good news for the planet could be expected. Our soon-to-be government is dominated by a populist extremist who, in addition to being racist, Islamophobic and keen on cutting the country off from the realities of a globalised world, prides himself on calling climate measures “madness” that must be “sent to the shredder”. The new Dutch leadership also includes a pro-farmer party defending old-school unsustainable agribusiness models. So it was no surprise that several audience members at the Community Café expressed anxiety about this unsettling political context. But the main takeaway from the event was positive. “At the end of the evening, we want you to walk away with a sense of hope, inspiration, and, most importantly, community – because no one is in this alone,” the organisers at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam, said in their announcement. And at that, they succeeded. After an engaging panel discussion and presentations by experts on human rights and climate, social and organisational psychology and climate journalism & communications, Daphina Misiedjan, Ph.D., Niels van Doesum and Abhimanyu Chakravorty, the floor was opened to questions. A lively and meaningful exchange followed, featuring topics ranging from community activism to global food system change, responsible business conduct, climate litigation, solutions journalism and beyond. The audience was delightfully diverse, with people young and old from all corners of the globe bringing in a variety of perspectives. When I left, I descended the ISS’ stairs (fittingly adorned with the word WELCOME in multiple languages) feeling strengthened and relieved. Indeed, we are not alone.
