Non-Executive Director / Independent Advisor / Ocean Conservation / Arctic Expeditions

It is with great humility and excitement I accept the chairmanship of John Nurmisen Säätiö /The John Nurminen Foundation from Juha Nurminen, the founder and long-time chair. Founded in 1992, the Foundation originally began with a focus on preserving the cultural heritage of the Baltic Sea. But when Juha saw the impenetrable algal blooms during boat trips on the Gulf of Finland, he realized that the sea needs immediate action. In his words: “What is the point of protecting marine culture if the sea is about to die.” Since then, the Foundation has started many marine conservation projects and achieved immeasurable results: it is considered, with its partners, the most impactful actor in making the Baltic Sea cleaner. The work of the Foundation has especially focused on reducing the flow of nutrients, like phosphorus and nitrogen, that cause eutrophication in the sea. Primarily by improving water purification plants and discharge from large pollutants, the phosphorus levels in the Gulf of Finland, a part of the Baltic Sea, have been reduced by approximately 75% compared to the beginning of the century. This achievement has been called the world record of nature conservation. In addition to this the Foundation has continued its work of preserving maritime culture. To this end, it has published numerous books, the best having been awarded the Royal Geographic Society Fordham Award in 2016. It has also held several exhibitions of its substantial collection of invaluable maritime objects and maps and brought this content to new audiences via digital channels. In all of this considerable work during the past 32 years, the guiding principles have always been a strong will to create measurable results, a readiness to get one’s hands dirty and a willingness to be courageous. The Baltic Sea is still one of the most polluted seas in the world and as climate change speeds up many of the adverse effects, the challenges are multifaceted and significant. But we also have hope. The Baltic Sea is now in better condition than it was at the turn of the millennium. In addition, environmental awareness and awareness of the sea are in greater public focus now. This helps us collaborate with many companies and other partners both in Finland and internationally to ensure that the resources for a cleaner sea are allocated most efficiently. Here at the Foundation our vision remains strong. Our mission is to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage for future generations. For this purpose, we have built a dynamic strategy and, most important of all, have a passionate, hard-working team headed by our fearless CEO, Annamari Arrakoski-Engardt, Ph.D Arrakoski-Engardt. So, despite the challenges, I look toward the future with great confidence. Our focus is clear - we will protect and take care of what we love, the hero of the show, The Baltic Sea. And I am so excited to be part of this journey! Foto: Erkki Salo #oceanconservation #balticsea #itämeri
